How has Society Passed You By? (1 Viewer)

Okay. Bethesda has been a mainstay of massive single player games and they're caving in to this Massive MP battle fad. Your Overwatches and Fortnites are running the show and big publishers are playing catch-up. The days of the big budget SP games I think are going to close up soon as the costs are too high when its not what Millennials want to play.

Bethesda is making a Fallout spinoff game with multiplayer and people lose their minds...meanwhile, they also announced a new Elder Scrolls game and Starfield, both single player games....

Rockstar, Sony Santa Monica, Insomniac, Crystal Dynamics, Ubisoft, etc....all still making quality single player games...

Battle Royale is a gaming fad that will be dead much sooner than single player games

Bioshock?

In the next two months, Red Dead 2 and Fallout 76 both come out. That is about 4 years worth of actual play time for me. At that rate I am nearing the end of how many games I can actually play in my lifetime. Its been a good life though; I did it my way.

The first two I just find annoying when someone tries to make that argument especially since it's usually a baby boomer making it, easily the generation most responsible for the state of our country because they...lack responsibility and accountability for the reasons we are where we are now. But your third point, that's the one I truly loathe. It's not that "everyone tries so hard to be offended". It's that more varied point of views and walks of life can now freely voice their opinions. Whether it's members of the LGBTQ community, women, people of color, various ethnic origins and religious preferences, they are all part of the community that you describe as "everyone". Everyone is no longer a monolithic male block with the same sensitivities so of course there's going to be various reasons why different parts of population will be offended. And we should all be sensitive to that.

OK, cool.

Every day, there are more and more things in society that make me want to yell at the kids to get off my lawn. What are the big societal shifts that make you feel disconnected?

1) Giant tattoos on chicks. I don't get it. I never will. I came up in the days of tramp stamps and butterflies on ankles. Beautiful women getting sleeves and full back tats is lost on me. Why would they paint stripes on a Ferrari?
REPLY: I'm with you. Not big on the overuse of body art.
2) Video Games. Single Player only for me. I don't get these giant Battle Royale online all the time games that are taking over. The SP experience is dying off and eventually I'll be done also.
REPLY: Big disagree. Now, I do not play video games ever, but if people (particularly my kids) are going to be gaming, I'd rather have them socializing with other people in four-on-four games rather than just one person against one program. I think this new stuff is great.
3) Popular music. This one's easy and I think most old guys will say this. And no, pop music back in the 70s and 80s wasn't just as bad. madonna and Michael Jackson destroy anything crapped out today. Fact.
REPLY: Matter of taste. I like my old stuff but I let my teenage kids program my tunes sometimes (mostly rap and hip-hop) and it's just fine.

Get off my lawn.

Ok mods... this belongs on the Dot9 now apparently.

Tattooed women are hot.. or should I say, hot tatooed women are hotter, so tats are a just fine.

Rocket League is adding Competitive Hoops next week... Awwww yisss.

People holding up their cellphones and recording during a game or concert. You paid a lot of money to see them live. Are you really going to watch that later?

Get off my lawn!!

Meh. Some tattoos on women look hot, others, not so much.

I love being able to stream/download/whatever music. Technology is awesome. I still go out and buy vinyl, though, as well as some CDs.

I haven't played a video game since 2010. I'd like to, I just don't have the time to set aside to play for 3 hours a pop.

And what about airline food? Right?

Have you heard about Pluto?

Who still downloads music? Is it 2014 still?

Streaming music is definitely not hi-fi quality, although it's fine for the car

But that's even another step further away from "owning" something. I enjoy the ritual of going through the shelf or the record bin, picking something out to listen to, putting it on, then sitting down and looking at the artwork or lyrics with a glass of scotch or bourbon. Even more so if I have company over and they want to pick something out. I have a high-end portable player with like 2,000 albums that I can use to play through the stereo or my headphones, and while that's super convenient I feel like something's missing from the experience.

Bioshock was 2k Games, i think...

yea, I was just saying it sounds like a similar theme. I have learned to pay way more attention to who is making games these days. You can generally get an idea for how good it will be and just as important, how intuitive the controls are. Especially shooters, they seem to stick to the same control schemes that have worked in the past.

Uh oh. I hope this thread isn't passing by those already left behind. My bad.
