With Brees sure to command a large cap figure and the majority of assets being used to get the team over the hump, how would you feel about the Saints signing a QB with the hopes of have that guy be "the next guy?"

There are some intriguing QBs who might become available.
To be clear, I don't think these guys are nessecarily future greats but they might have potential that can be groomed.

Bridgewater, Keenum, Bortles, Tannehil all might become available. I am sure I am missing some others.

All of the guys I mentioned are all damaged but if you can hit on the right undesirable guy it gives you a huge advantage cap wise.

Just interested in what you guys think.

with signing brees, we can't afford an FA backup, that would be able to replace him when he moves on.
we have to draft one, or count on Hill to be the qb of the future, with maybe daniel as backup until he's ready.

Whomever that would be must be willing to sit behind and learn from Drew Brees a few years. I think that’s unlikely. But if it were to happen, that could be a big win for us.

If we go this route, it would have to be someone willing to come in for a minimum contract to be the clipboard holder until his time comes, at which time then he would get a pay raise.

Only way

I expect Brees to be around for another 2-3 seasons, so this isn't the offseason, at least in my opinion, to draft a quarterback. Roll with Brees, Daniel, and Hill again, continue the youth/athleticism movement on defense and the offensive line, and win the Super Bowl.

I would rather them go this route and that's what I think they will do. Payton has yet to show me he can draft a QB. Offensive Linemen, RB, WR, TE....yes. QB....no.

There ARE teams eyeing Brees now. He's the ONLY true franchise QB available. Despite his reassurances, he's the same guy that held out a few years back for a cap busting contract. Now, he's not even the highest paid, beaten out by guys who've never sniffed a Super Bowl.

IF he starts talking to other teams, we'll have to look at someone NOT already in our system and the available pros are not a franchise QB. They'd be a stopgap, and expensive stopgaps, too!

The fact is, our options are either extremely costly (especially if we pay Brees!), or, a prayer for deliverance.

I really think that Brees can play at least 3 more years. So imo it's best to wait until next year to draft a replacement. Why have a higher pick like that sitting on the bench for 3 or more years? We have more pressing needs as of now and the Brees window is closing.

Aaron Rodgers sat for 3 years behind Brett Favre. Look what he became.

I don't say the Saints will draft a QB in this draft. But they could.

If they don’t draft one they really like, then I’d rather they re-sign Daniel on the cheap and then really give Taysom Hill a crack at making a name for himself.

Why not bring Nassib back? He has familiarity with offense and won’t command a huge salary .

I agree except if Mayfield is there when we pick.

Geeze... after signing Brees again there won’t be anything left to work with...
