Ian Rapoport: Saints Not Planning to Rebuild (4 Viewers)

People need to understand, Mickey Loomis is a very competitive person. His demeanor may not say that, but he is. Any type of full scale rebuild would be the antithesis of that.

I will continue to believe that, Allen wasn’t able to maximize this roster but consecutive blow out wins don’t happen when you have a bad roster either.

While aging it’s a competitive roster w/ depth issues that can be solved realistically w/ a 7-8 man draft class and some bargain bin FA’s

Oh and fewer injuries
The whole aging roster spiel isn't really accurate. The average age of the team is pretty much right down the middle of the league. Every team has a handful of vets somewhere on the roster. We have a few, but they're in a couple of key positions and don't really have a good replacement. Cam Jordan and Demario Davis. We just traded away Latt and Honey Badger is probably gonna retire soon.

On the offensive side, Taysom while dealing with some injuries hasn't slowed down too much but he's getting up there. Same with AK. And Carr probably will be replaced in another year or two.

The roster outside those guys is pretty young. A good couple of drafts and a few free agents during the offseson and we'll be ok roster wise.

The bigger issue is the number of injuries is absurd. I don't know what it is, but the team seems more prone to injuries than just about every other team. Not sure how to fix that.

A rebuild or whatever else it's called isn't necessary IMO, what we need is as follows:

1) Get ML out of the decision making process, bring a young, hungry GM in
2) Have that GM hire the next coach (whether it's Rizzi or someone else they need an aggressive offensive mindset)
3) Hit on the draft, try to get extra picks if possible
4) Re-evaluate and hopefully improve the medical staff and policy/procedures

None of these things are easy....

Hitting on the draft is #1 in my view.

I don't disagree and my list wasn't in order of importance (if that is what you were even responding to), but I think the chances are better if ML is not involved....

I think Loomis can still get the job done. He still has his right hand men to manipulate the cap (although to a less degree perhaps) and draft somewhat efficiently recently. The problem to me was he and Dennis Allen were both kinda followers of men. Loomis had Payton to kinda pull the strings and then with Dennis it was kinda the two spidermen pointing at each other meme. Maybe with a more of a leader of men coach in the way that Detroit has done it could work out.

We really never truly got to see our young QB's behind a pro bowl center and an improving young line. With health and a good hype man we may could do something here. There will be a new good day people. It might not be today lol. Stop throwing all the shade. Get some positivity in this hizzy!

I'm gonna go lurker for anther decade or so.
Peace

This roster is not as good as Mickey and some Saints fan make it out to be. We have 2 starting LB's on the team and Davis is on the decline. We have ZERO starting DT's on this team. We have a questionable starting RT, a rookie starting LT (that may be a gaurd), no LG and a subpar RG we overpaid. There isn't a true starting WR on the team. Olave is best served as a second threat, if he can actually even come back after 4 concussions. Shaheed has talent but he's injured right now and on a short contract. Granderson is the only starting level player we have on the D-line and while he's good he's not a dominate player week in and week out. Our best safety is old and will start to decline and we have a combo of Harris and Howard on the other side. We have two depth TE's in Johnson and Moreau. Oh and our 15th ranked QB in his best season 6 years ago. Kamara and Taysom are dogs but one is about to be 35 and the other is approaching RB purgatory at age 30. Even if Kamara has 3 more years in him, he's your only viable treat on offense. Yeah, super talented.

I tend to agree that ML needs to go. Not too thrilled with how he's handled the Allen firing. If he can't see or admit that Allen was an issue, then he needs to go.

If he had bit the bullet sooner and did the tough thing by firing Allen sooner, I'd be more supportive of him.

If I had Gayle's ear, I'd certainly make it clear she needs to move ML outside of football operations and hire a new GM.

Dunno how any fan can be excited going forward if they trot Mickey Loomis back out as GM next year. There is now a track record of him pre and post payton/brees.
So in your statement, you're saying that Mickey Loomis is a pretty decent GM if given A higher caliber coach? I agree!

So exactly what qualifies for a rebuild?

So you got a new coach and you get a handful of new players, is that a rebuild or just a remodel? How about 10 new players? Can you have a rebuild without a new GM?

I guess the semantics of it all confuses me

I think rebuilds are more rare than believed, teams are generally planning to be competitive every year. People thought the Bucs were tanking last year and they won the division.

You might make a few moves to give you better future opportunities (ex. Bucs eating Brady’s dead money, Saints trading Lattimore), but fire sales don’t happen nearly as often for teams.
Right. The Lattimore trade was an admission that the season is over is all. We got rid of Latt while we are still able to get something valuable. Had we traded Olave (Pre-injury) for example that would indicate that we’re literally tearing it all down and starting over.

Sadly I think the thought of us getting rid of Loomis is a pipe dream. I'm so happy Mrs. Benson stepped up and got rid of Allen. The most anyone could hope for is moving him into a higher position and have him select a gm that he can bend the knee too. Maybe he would get fired but I thought I heard on WWL that he was like 3rd in line with Benson, Someone, and then Loomis with the other two deciding succession in case of Mrs. Bensons death.
