If we miss out on Daniels, is there another QB to draft in the 1st? (3 Viewers)

I have no problem with us taking the 4th or 5th QB in the middle of the first round if the right guy is there

2023 - Will Levis goes as the QB4 with the first pick of the 2nd round; not saying he's a future HOFer but he's brought life to the Titans when they were middling around with their journeyman QB (sound familiar?)

2021 - Justin Fields, going QB4 at the 11th pick

2020 - Jordan Love, going QB4 at the 26th pick

2018 - Josh Allen, going QB3 at the 7th pick

2018 - Lamar Jackson, going QB5 at the 32nd pick

And so on and so on. Good talent can be found even outside of QB 1 or 2 in a draft, and it can be found outside of the top 5 or even 10 picks in the draft.

No to Penix who had season ending injuries all 4 years at Indiana and a couple of surgeries on his knees already. No to Nic who is too excitable and an absolute RPO system QB. Doesn’t pass well enough from pocket.

What?!?!?! Tell me you don't know what you're talking about without saying so.

Cleveland been drafting QBs early damn near every 4-5 years.

Mayfield 2018
Mandrel 2014
Weeden 2012
Quinn 2007

Taking Watson broke the cycle of drafting a QB high, him not working out, then drafting another one once the last guys rookie deal was up.
I can see how what I'm saying makes little sense from that summary. I'm thinking of the multiple picks high in the first round under Sashi Brown, before 2018, where they passed over QB again and again, often trading down. Weeden and Manziel were late firsts, and players not actually rated that highly, and it was only when they spent their early first on a QB (Mayfield) that the franchise changed tack on the position. The most egregious example was in 2017 when they held the pick to select Deshaun Watson and traded it away.

In the end they had to throw that ridiculous trade and contract at Watson to try to fill the game's most critical position.

However, I can see the point that selecting the likes of Manziel and Weeden are also reminders of the folly of thinking you just have to draft someone at the position. They looked bad for trading the rights to select Wentz away, but after a strong start he turned out to be a poor QB.

Of course right now all the draft nerds on TV will say 4 first round QBs. Someone will fall to the 2nd or 3rd, watch

The best QB in the league today was taken with the last pick in the draft. You can find QBs any round
And the best QB ever (sorry to say as a Saints fan) was taken in the 6th round.

At the end of the day, it is a position where to be among the best requires not just the physical tools, as all positions in the NFL do (a grade A arm), but also insane drive/competitiveness and near genius level mental processing speed - you have to get your pre-snap read right, and you have about 1.5 seconds after the snap to figure out whether that pre-snap read was correct, or was some sort of disguised coverage, and figure out where to go with the ball.

Agree 100% with this--need more speed and playmakers ---Bowers is my #1 target

This. We are lacking speed across the board and don't have enough playmakers. We are also missing some toughness on offense, guys would can break tackles and get the YAC. I've been pretty outspoken about Olave, but I do see some improvement in his catching with contact (player/ground). We have no playmaker at TE, so Bowers would be a huge addition should he be the guy. Other than Nabers, Odunze, MHJr, I do like Coleman as he would bring that physicality to the WR position that MT brought. AT Perry is developing as well, but he needs to be more physical with his size and hopefully he develops that as he gets bigger/stronger.

There are SO many recent examples of teams trying this approach (QB no matter what) and failing miserably and being in as bad or worse position
If the right QB is there you pull the trigger, if not don’t draft a 4th rd QB in the 1st
Nobody wants a 4th round QB in the 1st, what we want is a QB. There are 6 legit QBs that could be taken in the first round. Williams, Maye, Penix, Nix, Daniels and McCarthy. We need one of those to get some life in this franchise again. And that is just 1st round, 2nd and 3rd round( which we don't have a pick) probably has 3 or 4 more to pick from. This is the best QB class in quite a while. Get a QB!!!!!!!! We don't have a 3rd or 4th round pick, so it has to be 1st or 2nd round to get a quality QB.

'21 NFL draft:
Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round — Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones — the second highest number of first-round quarterback selections

2020 NFL draft 4 taken 1st round : Joe Burrow, Tua, Herbert and Jordan Love. QBs are 50/50 even in the 1st round, depends alot on how they are developed. We just never even try to develop one. I'm saying that on paper this is one of the best draft classes to take a chance on a QB so we don't have to pay $200 million for one and suffer the salary cap of not being able to keep players around him.

Don't get your hopes up. We're going to draft an OL from a Midwest dental school who's had three seasons cut short by injury.
And don't forget we are going to play him out of position!

I like Daniels, but feel like he will be a more talented, more fragile Lamar. Ultimately I think he will be brilliant when on the field, but missing too many big games. I won't cry myself to sleep if we don't get him.

You do realize Lamar was 6'3" 211lbs at Louisville (6'2" 216lbs at the Combine) and Daniels is 6'4" 210lbs? He'll be in the 215-220lbs range for the Combine. Now you have a more talented bigger version of Lamar. At some point these excuses will dry up, but I doubt it since he'll look "thin" yet be the same size at CJ Stroud.
