If Will Campbell is there do you take him and move him or Trevor to guard? (1 Viewer)

I don't love the idea of having 2 short -armed tackles in Fuaga and Campbell. A lot of draft folk seem to think Campbell is a better Guard prospect than Tackle, in which case he's your LG fix. But do you take a LG at 9? Also, his run blocking grades at LT are not that impressive.
Been a lot of long armed tackles in the league that have been absolutely garbage. Will played 2,553 snaps in 3 years allowing only 5 sacks – 3 as a true freshman in 2022 and 2 in 2024 … Had a streak of 24 straight games without allowing a sack before giving up one against Florida in 2024. He has played in the toughest conference in college football against NFL caliber players weekly at the LT spot and produced the aforementioned numbers. He is a franchise LT and will be fine. If anyone moves to guard it would be Penning. I’d gladly take Fuaga and Campbell as my tackles for the next several years. Actually hope it happens because we need to fix the o line almost more than we need skill players. McCoy, Campbell, Fuaga would be an outstanding start to fixing that line.

IMO, Campbell is overhyped. He has good but not great footwork, shorter arms and he doesn't do well with bull rushes. He benefitted from Daniels mobility and Nuss' quick trigger.

What do yall think?
You move Campbell for many reasons.

1. Penning just started getting comfortable at RT. Which is huge for his development. If you keep shuffling him around it could hurt his confidence.
2. Most NFL teams are going to view Will as an IOL, who is versatile enough to play tackle in a pinch. Hes got really short arms, and he can potentially be an all pro guard.
3. If the Saints viewed Penning as having potential at guard they would have shifted him there a while ago. With all the IOL injuries we had this past year it would have been convenient for him to play guard and they still didn't do it. That could be bc of the reason I said earlier, but I digress.

Lastly I will say, this draft is one of the deepest drafts for IOL I have ever seen. As much as I love Campbell your going to be able to get really good value in the 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th rounds. It's going to be much smarter to go Edge or WR if McMillian is there with our first pick. If we go edge first (James Pearce Jr hopefully) you can grab somebody like Donovon Jackson, who many think is the best day 1 IOL in the draft, or one of the remaining top 4 receivers (Luther Burden, Marcus Golden, Emeka Egbuka... etc). I like all three of those guys, just depends what kind of receiver the Saints feel fits the most into their plan.

Hell this draft is very deep and talented at TE as well.

This draft can be huge for the Saints. It lines up that some of our weakest positions, this draft is really deep at (IOL, DI, Edge etc..)

You put Campbell at guard, if penning shows 0 improvement on the year then you swap them the following season. Campbell having short arms isn’t the end all be all. He will be a very good pro. People said Trey Hendrickson would never be good bevause he had short arms lol

Many of the scouts I've read are saying that his short arms are going to dictate a move to guard in the pros.

Would I pick him at 9 knowing that?

Absolutely!

Just because he didn't give up a sack does not mean he didn't look weak at times. Most scouting reports have him moving inside

A big no to drafting an OL in the 1st rd , ANY of them. Their grades are not high enough to pass on a similar graded DT , Edge or Big X WR. Heck even a TE like Warren or Loveland

Fuaga doesn't have short arms for playing T in the NFL.
He has average arms 33" but less than 34"...

Will Campbell possibly has arms that are shorter than 33".
If this is confirmed at the NFL Combine, he will be an OG in the NFL.

I am not convinced that Campbell is a "can't miss" prospect at Guard.

I am also not convinced that even a home run at Guard with our first round pick makes us as much better as we would a premier offensive skill position player or a defensive lineman.

Let's take Guard later, even in the 2nd or 3rd round. We definitely need more depth there and hopefully a rookie develops or Saldiveri turns a corner. We have just invested so much in offensive line, we need the pieces we have already invested in to pay off.
I have dedicated the 2nd round pick to Guard. Having said that, I don’t think there will be a value at our pick.

I refuse to pick a guard at 9 so I’m thinking a trade up or trade back would be the move if I’m doing my mock.m

One way or another, we absolutely MUST address guard…. Either with a top draft pick (not 9) or a FA or BOTH…

I watched every LSU game. I didn't see dominating LT he was supposed to be.

Campbell has good foot work. He will be a very good OG in the NFL.
He would fix our gigantic hole at LG!

I specifically watched Greg Zabel at the Senior Bowl game.
He struggled at G but looked solid at C.
He has slow feet for a G but he is shooting up the draft boards as an OG.
I would take Campbell any day over him as our LG.

No…we have already dedicated enough premium draft assets on the OL.

Also, Penning is simply not a guard. We have found a spot where he can play and not be a liability, and he’s very good in the running game…don’t disrupt this man’s career trajectory at this point.

RT is his position and he will be here for at least another two seasons. Let him focus on this.
