In Your Opinion, Why Should the Saints Steer Away from the Payton Coaching Tree? (1 Viewer)

He absolutely is. Before New Orleans he was quality control for the falcons for 2 years then defensive assistant for 1 year.

He came here with Payton in 06 and was a position coach for 5 years which led to him being DC for the Broncos for a year then HC for the Raiders. Then he comes back here to be DC for 7 years under Payton before HC. He's as Payton tree as they come. He's more Payton tree than Campbell who was a position coach in Miami for 6 years, then interim head coach there before coming here.
Beat me to it. lol

You know how your folks would buy a house, furnish it, and just kinda leave everything set in that position forever? Then you move a portrait or mirror, and a shadow has kinda bleached itself into the wall. Or you take a figurine from a display case and a ring of undusted shelf jumps off the surface at you.

For better and worse, this house is back on the market, and a new buyer (coach) can spruce it all up and have it feeling and looking fresher than it’s been for some time now.

The world has changed. Payton is riding his defense. They are ranked 8th, we are 30th
Not totally true what Payton has done with Nix is smart and it takes a good coach to realize what he has to do to help his young QB succeed. I find it funny how fans will still try to undercut what Payton is and that's an excellent coach that can win. Payton is doing very well in a division that is 10 times tougher than ours.

Everyone has their reasons for not liking Sean or thinking we are better off without him, or he is washed up. I know a lot of people are really butthurt he left the way he did. Payton did what was best for him, and I bet you anything looking at what mess we are in now Micky The Gas lighter Loomis is our biggest roadblock. I am surprised we are 30th after losing both of our starting corners with Adebo injured and Lattimore traded.

Does Payton really have much of a coaching tree? He's an offensive coach, so I'm not going over guys like Aaron Glenn who really worked for DA. Payton had two offensive coordinators his entire time in NO. Marrone and Carmichael. Marrone was 38-60 as an NFL head coach. Pete hasn't done anything. Joe Brady hit to lottery a couple of times being able to work with Brees and Josh Allen, but I'm not sure what he'd do with Carr or Rattler. Curtis Johnson is coaching UFL. I guess Joe Lombardi counts sort of, but he a Lombardi and is Paytons current OC in Denver. Dan Campbell was an NFL coach for 5 years before working for Payton for 4 years, maybe he counts but I don't think so.

You are not going to get to a 12 win season year one with a new coach
CSP took a 3-13 team to 10-6 and an NFCCG in his 1st season. That's a +7 game improvement. Saints are currently 5-9. CSP demonstrated what the right hire can do. It's probably not likely, but it's possible. At this point it appears the Saints final record will be 6-11, with a ceiling of 7-10. It seems that 10-7 is the likely floor to guarantee a playoff spot. We just need a coach to make a +4 game improvement. And even with injuries, an argument could be made that better coaching in situational moments likely would have resulted in that outcome THIS year. JMO...

It’s all subjective right?

If Campbell doesn’t count as part of the “Payton tree,” then maybe we shouldn’t include Payton in the “Parcells tree.”

Payton was an assistant on Ray Rhodes’ staff in Philly (directly under OC Gruden) for 97-98 and then on Jim Fassell’s NYG staff from 1999 to 2002 (QB coach and then OC) before his 3 years with Parcells.

I say Payton probably learned more from Parcells and Campbell more from Payton (on how to run a whole football team), regardless of previous experience.

Yes

Fresh start. I'm astonished at how many people have lowered their expectations since Sean and Drew left. The goal should be another ring, and I would rather try and fail than keep going along with barely average quarterbacks and coaching candidates. That said, hire the best guy.

Yeah, good points for sure. So Campbell is the only one of note that has succeeded without Payton.

And Campbells 5 years in Miami were with what, 3 different HC's? Solid point here.
