Interesting info on the surgery that was performed on Drew Brees (1 Viewer)

But I believe with all my heart that when the doctors conclude that there would be little to no chance of re-injury in the course of normal play, then when he reaches the level of control with the football that can have him effective in the pocket, then he needs to be back out there no matter what week it is.
The Cardinals game on Oct. 27th will be 39 days post-surgery (about 5 1/2 weeks). Then the bye, then the Falcons come to the Dome on Nov. 20th, 53 days after the surgery (7 1/2 weeks).

Lots of unknowns regarding Brees' rehab and getting-back-in-the-groove practice work to come. Coming back against the Cardinals would be a gigantic deal, IMHO.

It would border on miraculous. But many folks thought the same thing about his rotator cuff surgery. So if anyone can do it, Drew is the man!

I hope these few weeks Drew is having to miss will stir a great panic in his soul at the thought of retiring, and make him decide to play another 4 years or until his arm falls off. Or at least 1 year longer than Brady.

Completely agree!

Let me play devil's advocate here for a momemt...

Im surprised nobody has mentioned this yet.

Baseball and basketball players compared to a NFL QB. Think about the different hand muscles used in each of these sports. Or better yet actually go out pick up and throw a baseball, dribble and shoot a basketball and then pick up and throw a football.

Each sport requires different muscle actions to perform this adequately.

Basketball IMO requires the least thumb action.

Baseball requires much more but the index and middle fingers are used more in throwing during release.

Football requires the most thumb action because of how the ball is widely gripped on the cone to hold it and then accurately released to throw properly.
(Remember the video footage of Drew unable to pickup a football on the sidelines during Rams game).

Now Drew will have to retrain his surgically repaired thumb to not only grip and throw a football but with his feel and touch and GOAT accuracy. Not to mention taking hard snap from under center and to perform play action with the ball.

Will all this magically occur in that 6-8 week window along with Drew's hallmark quick release and accuracy?

If anybody can and will I think it is Drew Bress. ???

However, it may take even longer since this surgery has never been done with a NFL QB.

As an OT, I see this surgery through the eyes of a clinician. The most difficult part of the rehab process will be to regain grip strength at the MCP joint When a QB grips a football, the dynamics of that grip place the greatest pressure at the pad of the thumb which in turn places more stress via leverage on the UCL and supporting muscles. As you note, this is entirely different from gripping a baseball or basketball.

At least we know Drew won’t shirk his ROM/strengthening exercises. I’ll head down with my custom dynamic hand splint and a 12-pack. Rehab is hard work :hihi:

Okay... let's also consider the unlikely possibility that the new grip that Drew will have will be one that is even stronger than he had before the injury.
And let's assume that during his rehab he relates it to the way his hand felt when he was 25.
And then he quickly notices that the new pressure he can put on the ball allows him to sling his passes with more distance and velocity.
Then it not only gets him back to playing quicker and at a high level, but it enables him to extend his career an extra two years than he ever expected he would have before the injury.

Hey... it could happen. :ezbill:

Yes, but...it's Drew.

Indeed it is and his personal "mantra" ever since his shoulder injury is all about "coming back stronger." You can believe he's doing everything in his power to do just that.

Drew is the Drewiest man in the world!

Agreed! Last year when he broke the passing yardage record, all the babbling talking heads showed the clip of his "teachable moment" with his kids, then immediately misquoted him as saying "you can accomplish anything you set your mind to." A noble aspiration, but that's NOT what he told them!

He told his kids "you can accomplish anything you're willing to work for.". It's the difference between thinking about being great, and taking action to be great. Huge difference IMO! And I have NO DOUBT he's working for it as we speak right now!

All true, just saying that Drew has massive muscle memory to draw on. He probably has a million throws in his practice, warmups, and games in his career, and can do it without thinking.
