I was uptight about our receivers after the season. I am throwing the TEs together with the WRs. It scared me. I was and am thrilled to get Meredith and drafting Smith and getting Watson back. But somewhere in here, i forgot/didn't realize how freakin good Ginn was under Curtis's coaching. These stats are not exact but pretty darned close.

- over 750 yards with nearly an 80% target to catch rate
- 4 TDs
- Plus he had running yards
- His drop rate was actually quite good

This is with Kamara and Ingram getting over a 1,000 passing yards and Thomas over 100 receptions.

In the Minny play-off game, he caught 8 of 10 passes for 79 yards. And he ran all the routes: over the middle, outs, come back hooks, and had 2 great dragging the feet catches. And what we forget, or at least I did till I watched the 1st half last night is that he absolutely torched the Minny DBs, and was wide open when Brees nailed him for a 40 yard TD in mid 2nd quarter. That play was called back because Hill was not set.
With another year under Curtis, why can't Ginn be a lethal #2 WR? Now that he has a real WR coach, he seems to have blossomed. And he still has burner speed.

Can he really be a top #2 or do I have Homer glasses on? Thx

Our offense doesn't really have a #1, #2 receiver... of course Brees has his go-to guy in Mike Thomas, so I guess we can call him a #1 receiver.

But with the way Payton has built this offense... each receiver has a "role". You have your possession guy (Colston/Mike Thomas), and you have your field stretcher (Devery/Cooks/Ginn). And you have your utility guys that can do a lil bit of everything (Meachem/Snead).

Ginn excels at his role... he definitely blows the top off the defense and gives our offense plenty of space to work. I think bringing back Ben Watson will be huge in our offense because we had almost zero production from the TE position, so teams could defend us a certain way... which explains our horrid 3rd down percentage. Our offense has never had the issues on 3rd down that we had last year, and that was a result of not having a TE that could control the middle of the field.

Ben Watson will open up things for Ginn, and Vice versa. Not to mention the other weapons on the offense will have openings to make plays in the passing game. That doesn't even account for Kamara coming out of the backfield.

This is gonna be a scary offense to defend, and I can see Ted Ginn having a huge year. If you remember... when everything else was clicking with our offense, Meach and Devery were able to torch defenses. I can see Ginn having those same opportunities.

So Swimmer to answer your question... yea I think we're under-valuing Ginn now because we really couldn't see his full potential in the offense. He did great last year with the opportunities that he had, but now with more help on offense he's in for a huge season. His value won't get much higher.

Swimmer- for me, this is easily the best post you've made in at least 2 years.

I believe that many Saints fans do underestimate him and don't respect the value that he brings to our offense. He went from playing with the NFL QB who threw what is likely the least catchable ball in the NFL to the QB who throws the most catchable ball. He was also part of an offense that didn't realize that he could actually do more than only deep balls and reverses. Brees and Payton could be the fountain of youth for him.

Yes, Ginn is undervalued. When he first came out I was like man Ginn is fast but looked like he didn't have the reliable hands. Then Carolina got him and I was kinda meh on it. I figured it was a 50% chance or less he would burn us all the time. Then we got him and I was like..........well......we hurt a division rival???? Then Ginn played and I was like......DAMN.........night and day difference. Didn't see that one coming. TGIF and glad we got him.

I think one reason is because of his age. Most fans see him as a stop gap player. He was very good for us last year, but I believe we may only have him for 1 or 2 yrs more. If he was a lot younger, then he would be in the discussion.

A very pleasant surprise. The speed is still there, and his hands are much better than advertised. Could be that his new quarterback helps. :D

Brees missed Ginn on 4 wide open passes last year that would have netted roughly 270 additional receiving yards (and 4 TDs of course).

You do the math.

I hope his role is utilized this year but we have a full stable of WRs

Unless Smith takes off strong out the gate (not very likely), Ginn will still have his role as the all important field stretcher.

Adding Meredith only allows Ginn to be singled up more often.

I agree. Ginn has one thing against him he can't help. Let's hope he retained his speed.

I remember that. To me that tells me that the Saints didn't practice those deep plays that often.

I think Brees was just off on his long passes in the first half of the season. He finally connected vs Atlanta just before the half. And a couple more after that (Carolina playoff game of course).
