Is Ted Ginn Under Valued (1 Viewer)

If Ginn is as good as last year, he's under valued.

At his age, however, Ginn has to look good in camp. We have 3 big, fast WR's we didn't have last year, and Ginn has to beat at least 1 of them.

As long as he keeps his speed he will continue to have value. I thought he would be a decent role player, but he can do a lot more than I thought including YAC. If Brees threw to him his whole career he would likely be much more revered,

I expect Ginn to have 700-800 yards again. The main reason I don't see him doing more is Cam Meredith. I think Meredith will put up 1000 yards. I could also see Kamara getting 1000 receiving yards. I'm thinking it will look something like this:

Thomas: 1200
Meredith: 1000
Kamara: 1000
Ginn: 800
Watson: 500
Smith: 500

I was uptight about our receivers after the season. I am throwing the TEs together with the WRs. It scared me. I was and am thrilled to get Meredith and drafting Smith and getting Watson back. But somewhere in here, i forgot/didn't realize how freakin good Ginn was under Curtis's coaching. These stats are not exact but pretty darned close.

- over 750 yards with nearly an 80% target to catch rate
- 4 TDs
- Plus he had running yards
- His drop rate was actually quite good

This is with Kamara and Ingram getting over a 1,000 passing yards and Thomas over 100 receptions.

In the Minny play-off game, he caught 8 of 10 passes for 79 yards. And he ran all the routes: over the middle, outs, come back hooks, and had 2 great dragging the feet catches. And what we forget, or at least I did till I watched the 1st half last night is that he absolutely torched the Minny DBs, and was wide open when Brees nailed him for a 40 yard TD in mid 2nd quarter. That play was called back because Hill was not set.
With another year under Curtis, why can't Ginn be a lethal #2 WR? Now that he has a real WR coach, he seems to have blossomed. And he still has burner speed.

Can he really be a top #2 or do I have Homer glasses on? Thx

It's not about a #2 or #3, its all about matchups. We know MT if healthy will lead the WR's in receptions, other than that who knows, it could be Meredith, or Ginn or even the rook....

I hope not, that would put Brees over 5000 yards which likely means we are throwing a lot more than running which typically means 7-9....

I'm thinking 5,000 is a possibility. A little more passing, better defense (more possessions), and more 3rd down conversions (more offensive snaps).

I would be thrilled with between 4000-4500 yards passing and over 2000 yards rushing it is my idea of ideal balance and more wins would result I believe....

sfidc3 - You bring up a really good point that a number of other posters have expressed interesting views about our receivers in SP's offense. We are going to get between 4000 and 4500 yards passing or maybe more. MT will get his 100 catches and Kamara will get a bunch. Besides that, there's no way to tell how SP and Brees will divvy up the remainder of the receptions.

When I look back at Ginn's play last year, many of his catches were clutch. In the Minny playoff game, SP primarily used Ginn as a possession receiver, just like he did with Devery in the 2009 SB. As soon as Minny started to play Ginn tighter to the LOS, SP calls a streak route for Ginn over the middle from the 40 yard line of Minny. Ginn gets wide open and Drew delivers a perfect pass for an easy 40 yard TD strike. Unfortunately, Hill was not set. Kinda a ticky-tack call, but he was not set by a hair. Regardless, with that catch, Ginn would have had around 125 yards and a TD in the biggest game of the year. That is awesome stats for a #2 WR against either the #1 or #2 defense in the league in their back yard

I couldn't be more excited about the Meredith signing. imo, I think that will be looked as a a gold mine. I just wonder how Ginn will fit in with Meredith, Smith and Watson. Regardless, like you said, we will throw for at least 4000-4500 yards.

I’m watching the replay of Super Bowl 50 right now and actually made a thread about it.

Ted Ginn is awesome in that Super Bowl. He was torching Denver and had a ton of big plays. I see exactly why we signed him. He’s not undervalued by me.

Not under valued by me either. He was our stretch the field guy and one who could take a short pass a long way. He was better than Cooks in many ways. Just didn't have the yards. Part if that was because they ran the ball a whole lot more last year.

Ginns 53 catches last year were second only to MTs 103 among all Saints WRs/TEs.

Meanwhile After combining for 122 catches in 2016, last year, Snead n Fleener combined for THIRTY catches!

Consequently, after leading the league in 3rd down conversions in 2016, last year, we plummeted to 22nd!

Our WR/TE production last year was one of, if not the worst in the SP era.So Ginn, who was brought in to be the team’s field stretching threat and offset some of the loss in Cooks production, was now tasked with being BOTH field stretching deep ball threat AND move the chains/possession WR. So his value to the team last year cannot be understated!

With the offseason additions made at both TE and WR, that group might well be the most improved this year, which really ain’t a stretch, considering what they did last year!

But even if he’s lost a step, Ginn is still plenty fast, and he’s also earned a nice level of comfort n trust from Drew. So while his role(s) may change, I look for him to once again be an important part of our passing O!

Ginn was very good last season. What surprised me was his ability to run the other routes aside from the deep route. I am excited to see Ginn again this year. I think some may undervalue him. He was a very good to even great WR in this offense last year and can continue that trend this year as well.

In Miami, Ginn exhibited serious flaws. By the time he got to Carolina, he had corrected his flaws. The only surprise now is that Carolina let him walk after his numbers there. Miami Ginn could be sneered at. Saints Ginn is a serious weapon.

Agreed. Ginn was huge for us last year, I didn't look up his catch/drop rate but it must have been outstanding cause i don't remember seeing him drop a pass last year. This year though barring injuries I think his role will be a bit diminished in the offense, that is nothing against him as I think he is capable of putting up great numbers still it is just an inevitability. If healthy, Meredith and the rook are going to take some of his catches, I don't see anyway around that. That said I think he could be huge returning punts for us.

I think having Brees as your QB makes every receiver more valuable.

I'm sure he loves playing with Brees, but Ginn balled out for Carolina the year before he came to us, it is more about his maturation/late blooming as a WR than playing with Brees IMO. A credit to Ginn for massive improvement late in his career.....

He has been one of the more underrated players period his last 4 years in my opinion. He was instrumental in Panthers SB run. Watch his routes and his release. Hes a hard cover. Look at the Panthers passing game without his impact. He is a true veteran. Hes at that age were your always gonna try to get a younger flanker but has been a impactful player consistently.
