Jameis Winston’s contract becomes a $107m deal on March 16th trigger date (3 Viewers)

Every site I go says there a 10.7m bonus… did he accidentally add a 0 in his tweet. I see nothing about 107m.

Edit: Still not seeing anything but maybe it’s true. But not a big deal if it is. 107m option (?) bonus spread over five years because of the void years. 20m a year BUT if he’s released before then it all becomes a big fat 0.

Something does not make sense. So they paid him $100,000 to add 2 additional days to his contract and add a void year? Sounds like they are trying to work out a new deal that allows for him to be release as a post-June 1 cut?

Maybe? I don’t really know. All I know is all the sites have his cap hit listed at 10.7 so that why I’m thinking maybe an extra 0 was added by mistake. Also IF the restructure includes a bonus of 107m there’s really no way around it. If he’s on the team that bonus kicks in. If not, it doesn’t and his cap hit doesn’t change.

That is what they are doing. I don't totally get the details but what they did allows them to designate him as a post June 1 cut and spread the dead money over two years instead of it all hitting the cap in 2024.

Yes, he would have been a free agent at the start of the year and all of his dead money would have hit in 2024. Now he is under contract to start the year, so we can designate him a post June 1 cut and spread the cap hit across two years. To get him to agree to the contract change that benefits us more than it benefits him, we paid him $100k.

In theory, Winston would not be able to talk to teams during the legal tampering period due to him not officially being a free agent next year, so we had to do something to pay for that and for him not being available when the contracts start being signed.

But that's OK, because some very well informed posters here were recently all like, 'thE tEAm cAN stiLL maYBe CHOoSe tO rE-SigN hiM 🤪🤪'

They actually can. They could either work out a new deal before that deadline or sign him again after he becomes a free agent. I don't think it's likely after the end of the Atlanta game and I think Winston wants to have a shot to start which DA isn't going to give him. But, if he can't find that, he could be signed to backup again here.

Oh, sweet lord above. How high does the writing on the wall have to be? 10 feet? 20?

They drafted a guy last year to groom as the next backup. They have been busy getting out from under Jameis' original 'starter QB' contract for over a year, ready to let him go. No amount of over-analysing an entirely overblown final play of the season changes any of that.

He gone. The plan has been that he be gone since at least the point they selected Haener. If not before.

According to Spotrac, his cap hits are 4.5m in 24, 7.3m in 25, 0 after that. A pre June 1st release would result in dead cap of 10.6m in 24, 7.3m in 25, 3.9m in 26, and 567k in 27. Post June 1st release would be 3.36m in 24,25, and 26. And 567k in 27. I’m no cap wiz, just relaying what that site is saying.

Calm down. The drama really isn't necessary. I didn't say he would be back. All I said is that this provision in his contract doesn't make it impossible for him to come back which is what you claimed. I think it's highly unlikely that he will be back and I thought that long before the Atlanta game. But, I thought the same thing last year after Winston said DA lied about keeping his job and he ended up coming back so it's not totally outside of the realm of possibility. If Haener isn't ready to be the #2 QB and they don't draft a QB this year then they are going to have to sign a vet #2. Could it be someone other than Winston? Absolutely. But, it could be Winston.
