N/S Jane Slater: Coach Prime met with resistance after asking for more money for NIL and his staff (19 Viewers)

Yes corporate NIL is separate, but the NCAA approved it. Which, they didn’t set any concrete rules in place bc they didn’t foresee how big of a 💩 show this would get.

I don’t give 2 💩s about the Underwood stuff. I’m all for athletes getting their money. I just believe that they should get their money after they made a name for themselves. Like actually playing and playing well. No kid, fresh out of high school, should be getting million dollar deals before stepping foot on campus. That is my issue. But hey, if millionaires and billionaires want to waste their money like that, then I won’t lose any sleep at night.

The NCAA didn't have much choice. Because they supported a system that screwed the players over for so long players started to fight it. And that led to players being found to be employees by the Courts. At that point the NCAA became toothless. Players started talking about forming unions and getting the protection of the NLRA and collective bargaining. They essentially have no power anymore and just try to set rules that nobody has to follow.

The current situation isn't good for college football, but the NCAA and the schools have nobody to blame but themselves for the situation they are in.

As far as unproven guys getting money, that is the way of the world. Those guys have a marketable skill that others are willing to pay a premium for. I have no issue with them getting all they can. If they sustain an injury that prevents them from playing again, neither the school nor the billionaires are going to take care of them.

Its kind of like before they had a cap on drafted rookies in the NFL. It was insane how much money these top picks were getting before they played an NFL down. Eventually they came up with the rookie pay scale they use now but that was negotiated between the NFL and the players union. There is no players union in college football so I wouldn't expect any changes unless the players form a union and its collectively bargained. From the players side why would they want a union when they are the ones benefitting the most.

This isn’t about this season. This is about the next twenty.
Just to use LSU for example. What if they go on a decade long drought during the NIL era?

What if they do? It's happened before in the Pre-NIL ear and they still had plenty fans. College teams aren't like pro-teams when winning drastically changes their number of fans. LSU fans are going to remain LSU fans no matter what because they have connections to the school and the team that go beyond winning or losing.

Correct, it just all snowballed, too quickly, too soon.

I don’t agree with high school kids having a true skill at that age. Yes, everyone on the planet is marketable to an extent, but there is obviously a difference in high school skill vs College skill vs Pro skill. Very few high school players will continue their future stardom. Nothing is a given with 98% of high school players.

I think this is one of those “Two things can be right at once” situations. Yes, it’s fair for the players, no, this and the transfer portal aren’t good for the purity of the college game.
I agree that it needs to be tweaked, but I don't support the clear exploitation of labor that existed before. I'm very familiar with the academic side of colleges and universities, and I cannot emphasize enough that these 18-—to 25-year-olds are bringing in more revenue than the students and world-renowned scholars who work on the campus. Granted, I'm referring to the LSU-type schools, not Tulane, where athletics are a key part of the school's annual revenue.

For Coach Prime to succeed at the NFL level, I think he will need a Dan Campbell-like coaching staff.

Elite play callers on the offensive and defensive side.

I just think there needs to be a cap on what a player can make and I believe 1 transfer is all they need. And what is an entry level salary? Average Joe salary or football salary? Cause if it's an average Joe salary they gonna be making about 30k per year. I just don't see a kid making millions in college as right. If you cap a salary so they can't make more at another school, then they will be less likely to transfer. Just need a handle put on all this mess.
Make college football great again, oh my.

I agree with everything you say here. Can’t emphasize that enough. I just don’t think it is good for the sport.

It’s a legitimate predicament. Probably just needs better balance, tighter controls.

Even if NIL throws LSU into the same class as Arkansas and West Virginia?
Where the Texas Bowl is probably the best outcome?

No doubt. But if lots of schools agree that they think they have the skills, or will develop them, and that they are better than other kids, then are willing to pay big money for it. These kids have to take that money and I don't blame them.

It's not good for college football, but again the NCAA and the schools are reaping what they sowed. It's really not that different from the NFL where high draft picks that probably really don't deserve it are being paid really big money based mostly on the hope that they develop.

Yes. I recall many years where LSU and the fans were happy to go to the Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl in Shreveport or the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. LSU fans won't be happy with it if it continues, but they are not going to stop being LSU fans.
