Saints Jeff Duncan says, Saints are very interested in bidding for Xavien Howard. (1 Viewer)

Don’t be

I don't see the likelihood of a trade happening, but if we are able to pull it off I believe that would spell the end for Lattimore next year. For a quality guy like Howard it would take at least a 1st round choice, a high price but one I believe the Saints would gladly give up that draft choice. Interesting chatter and we will see if Miami is stupid enough to trade him anyplace!

OK say we trade for Xavien Howard. How much draft capital are we going to have to give up for him and how much will we have to pay him not counting that we have to sign Lattimore to an extension. We won't be able to afford to keep both. So then we release Lattimore next season and we're back stuck in the same hole, looking for another CB next season. With less draft picks, because we're going to have to give up at least 2 picks. Probably one next year and another maybe for 2023. Yeah this guy is probably the best CB in the league, but is it worth everything we might have to lose to get him? I'd be satisfied with Gareon Conley, he will come a lot cheaper and we don't have to give up any draft picks and we can extend Lattimore. Gareon is pretty solid, he's an up and coming player.

Who’s money is he taking? Terron’s, Marcus’, Lattimore’s, Winston’s, Hill’s? We are already $22M over the cap next season, so where does he fit in financially? In Loomis we trust, and we have seen Hartley and him work miracles in the past, but how do they navigate this

It on paper does not work unless we are intending to cut ties with guys like Terron or Lattimore and even Marcus if we don't believe we can sign him without exercising a second franchise tag (which we don't do because of cost). Having said that I will never put anything past Loomis and company IF they really want a player.

Wait, we already know what the cap will be next year? I thought it would be going back up??

It's been our FO's style to do it if we need/want to do it and figure it out later. We went from $100+M over to $11M under this year. Yeah, some of that hurt, but that was a mountain to overcome. The year we signed Byrd, I believe we were also over the cap and still made it work. If we get him, we absolutely have an elite if not THE elite secondary this year. And while the future matters, I can totally get behind making THIS year the most important year every year. That's how you remain contenders.
