If we trade for him just to sign him to a new deal, we better not trade much. Like a 4th rounder at most. Giving up draft capital just to pay a player is bad business.

You give up 1st rounders to get one of those nice discounted contracts that has signing bonuses paid by the old team. If you want to sign players to contracts just get the best corner in next year FAs. Not to mention how poor leverage you get. Their agent knows you have to sign them, or you just threw away your asset.
