Jenkins emerging as an elite safety. (1 Viewer)

ah whatever. if Tanard Jackson would quit getting suspended every season he would of passed up Ed Reed this season, almost every NFL expert admitted this.

and what's awesome is that we have thsi great secondary and we still have a 1st round CB waiting in the wings

How is Tanard at madden? You think he's better than Ed Reed or MJ? My goodness man, you know you would love a MJ on your team.

uh, ok....

What does that have to do with Jenkins?

/also, Ed Reed is washed up

no we already have a proven elite safety. Only thing he needs to prove now is that he can quit getting high and play a full season. Tanard is a straight baller on the field no doubt. IF Jenkins can play Strong Safety than sure i would want him but free safey i will take my own

From the minute he was drafted, it was clear that Jenkins was going to be a pro bowl caliber safety. The question was just how long it would take.

He's made for the position. One of the underrated aspects of his game is his tackling. He is as sure a tackler as we have on defense. He's strong. And in spite of the "lack of speed" that people were tagging to him (because he ran a 'lowly' 4.5 40), he is arguably are best all-around athlete on defense (I'm talking size, speed, agility... the whole gambit).

The thing I liked the most about having Jenkins at safety (and it is clear when you compare him to Sharper) is the versatility he brings tot he secondary. The ability to man up against WRs in nickel situations and allow the defense to stay base and go to zero coverage, or to bring in another ballhawk like Sharper rather than a CB, creates matchup issues for opposing offenses. Flexing out athletic TEs in 3rd down situations isn't as advantageous for an offense facing Malcolm Jenkins as it would be vs. more traditional safeties.

His versatility puts him in the same category on defense as Reggie Bush, Jeremy Shockey, and Jimmy Graham on offense.

I wish Jenkins would get better at turning his head when the receiver sees the ball. Right now he face guards and draws a penalty almost every time. Turn your head and find the ball, MJ!

my exact thoughts when I saw that picture.:smilielol:

A lot of people here were down on MJ earlier in the year. Nice to see it's turned around.

and to think two years back all we could say here was "but can he play safety"

I love your posts, but I petition for you to do an "editor's note" at the end of each post where you give a quick explanation of the football terms you just used... like "base" and "zero coverage". It would make us all smarter people in the end! :)

"Baller!"

I watched his highlights at OSU on youtube. Ha had IT. Strong, good tackler, smart, ball skills. But his biggest weakness was the hips/makeup speed. So it was understandable why many pundits thought he'd be a better fit at safety at the next level. But his play at CB at OSU gave him another asset that would serve him well at the next level: versatility.

THEN enter GW as DC, a man who covets the play of the safety in his system, a man who coached the late Sean Taylor, and called him the best player he ever coached.

Im sure he sees a lil of ST in MJ.

Heck, MJ played sparingly last year at CB and he hasn't even played a full year at his new FS position. Granted, he's still learning and has a way to go. But after starting off slowly, we can all see he's gotten better and better every week. And his upside is HUGE!

Meanwhile, somewhere, while nobody's around.....

GW is smiling!
