N/S Jets sign QB Justin Fields to a 2year/$40 million deal (28 Viewers)

These are now "normal" QB prices... That's why many of keep pounding the table for us to take QBs in the draft fairly highly every year until we find the right one... In some cases even if it means we pass on perceived other "team needs"... In the modern NFL there isn't very much better than having the right QB on a rookie deal.... That alone will literally resurrect and transform a franchise faster than just about anything (and make you a sustainable contender).

It is interesting that Fields slotted into the $20 million AAV bracket. Geno Smith at $25 million was the only guy in that spot and now will likely get $40 to $45 million. The other QBs were either $30 million and above or below $10 million. There isn't much of a middle class for NFL QBs which is how Carr ends up making so much.

Fields is not the only guy in the $20 million AAV range. I wonder if that will be a trend or if he will be the anomaly?

Were you also willing to pay him $40m over two years, with Carr's cap still on the books, to find out?

Yes. But I would have eaten all of call this year so he would be off the books next year.

I'm honestly not sure if it was possible, but I'd do just about anything to have a shot at a young long term franchise QB. It changes everything. And if you could get Fields at $20 million for 2 or even more years, it's a good situation to have money to build the rest of the team whether he works out or not.

That being said, I also would have signed him even with Carr on the team. Let them compete.

And effectively cancel out the comp pick for Adebo (in that scenario)...thank you, no

A young franchise QB is worth a lot more than a 3rd or 4th round comp pick. Sure he could bust, but a 3rd or 4th round comp pick is a small price to pay for the chance that he hits.

Plus, odds are when all is said and done, we may not get any comp pick anyway.

Fields will be the Jets starting QB. Former 11th overall pick and still 26 years old. $20 million a year is only the 20th most in the league for QBs. Cheap starting QB salary in this climate.

Compared to 30-60m per year, 20m is an ideal salary to pay the starting QB without having to commit long term expensive cap to him.

And I agree, and it’s cheap for a starting QB, but he won’t succeed in New York. For him to have any chance to do well, he has to play for a solid offense. So for me it’s still waste of money, they won’t be able to build around him and doubt they win more than 4-5 games this year.

It's actually peanuts in QB money. Remember, Dak is getting 60 and we're about to give Carr almost 70 more.

Yeah, and Dak’s $ is just nuts. However, Fields won’t succeed in New York and it’s just wasting a year or two.
