John Clayton on Shockey (5 Viewers)

Are you saying whomever we pick up in the 2nd round WILL be the missing piece that leads us to the Super Bowl? :idunno:

I live up here in the tri state area haven't heard much about shockey going to the saints other than from ESPN rumors. I don't think Shockey is a head case like people think. He is not going to cause problems with the Saints if he is traded there. I do believe he will help the Saints but it depends on what the Giants are asking for. Jerry Reese proved he can draft well with his first draft last year with Giants selecting Ahmed Bradshaw, Kevin Boss, and Steve Smith all huge contributors for the Giants throughout their playoff run. So if Loomis could get guys like that in the late rounds then maybe trading draft picks isn't worth it. I haven't really been impressed with Loomis in the draft. Colston was the only player in the late round who has really made a difference to the team. But I also don't think Shockey's career is over. I think he still wants to show his critics he can play. The Saints need a player who can light some fire to an offense who lets face it was flat last year. But as you can see I am a Shockey Fan. But I am also content with Eric Johnson too. Just excited to hear the Saints mentioned a lot in the off season.

The G-Men's 1st round asking price is waaaay to high for a oft-injured problem child like Shockey. They'd be lucky to get a 3rd for him.

Conventional wisdom says that, but the truth is, trading or signing FA's has become just as big of a crap shoot as the first 3-4 rounds of the draft.

I'd give a 3rd for him and no more. The Giants don't want him, he doesn't wanta be there, and he is injured. Noway do I overpay for him. Let them sit for a while. If they wanta move him bad enough they'll do it for a 3rd.

:plus-un2:

I totally agree, come draft time they'll get desperate to get rid of him.

When you consider these trades......good point btw...........but it is like the San Diego situation with Rivers and Brees. Everyone expected the chargers to get great value for trading one of those players......hell even Michael Turner. But when teams know you are going to get rid of a player no matter what, trade offers dry up. If the Saints send Shockey a few post cards, play nice nice while they keep thier name in the general trade conversation, and bide thier time. Either they are going to get a shot at shockey when the Giants decide they want to have a real trade conversation. OR....I think this is usually what happens. The Giants are going to end up cutting shockey and we can sign him w/o losing a draft pick.

You don't break the bank trading for a player when the writing is on the wall as it is with Shockey. The only reason you give ANYTHING for Vilma is because if you don't he will be a lion.

ok, the sentiment of FAs being a crapshoot these days because you don' know how they'll fit in your system, just as much as draft picks.. the thing is Payton has coached Shockey.. he KNOWS how he fits in HIS system.

Yup, no Super Bowl winner had a single player on their roster that they had gotten from FA or through a trade. :1dance:

And we'd care a little more about contracts if we didn't have the 2nd most money out of the entire NFL.

"But, but, but we have to resign players and draft picks...."

They won't cost that much. We can easily add Shockey and re-sign our players and draft picks. Remember, the CAP will increase.

Did I say that? I said build a team. Making a trade is fine, picking up one big FA is ok, but teams can not afford to build teams that way.

And come on...your smart enough to know that a cap increase means nothing. The cap is going up to allow players to make more. Contracts are simply going to inflate. It isn't going to actually give us more room to sign people.

And the statement that we have to resign our players and draft picks is totally true. Evans, Colston, Brown, and Smith are going to cost a fortune and at least 3 of them will have to be locked up this coming year. The 10th draft pick is going to make 20 million in guranteed money, and alot of that will have to be put towards his signing bonus and the cap this year.

All these big contracts also stay with us for years. Sure, we could use every ounce of cap space this year. But next year we'll have no room to make any moves. The year after that we'll be in cap hell as some of the contracts start really paying out and we'll have to do like several teams who screwed around and spent too much in FA or trades and start cutting people.

If Im not mistaken, the way things stand right now the salary is out the window after next season, isnt it? Football will get ruined like baseball. The league will have its share of NY Yankees and then its bottom dweller small market teams aka the KC Royals. I sure hope that this doesnt happen because I doubt Benson will be a big spender even if there is no cap. BDM

No, thats two years from now I think, or maybe 2010, but I don't think anyone really thinks the NFL will allow that to happen. They'll have it worked out.

I thought it was to take effect the 2009 season. Anyhow, I agree with you and hope that the NFL doesnt allow it. BDM

Could be 2009. Thats what I meant by 2 years. This same thing happened in 2006. Everyone was even saying it wouldn't get done and 2007 would be uncapped, but it got done.

I still think this may happen before or on raft day. Weve made made 2 efforts to get him, that shows Payton wants him bad

I saw everything I wanted to see from Shockey at the Superbowl. His team mates are on the field giving it their all and he was up top in a luxury box tossing back long-necks. Did he not want to be on the side-lines supporting his team? Did he not think his years of experience might allow him to pick up some read or tell from the Pats Defense that he could pass along to his team mates? Did he not think he should take on the role of emotional leader and want to be on the sidelines helping to fire up his team mates?

Nope. He wanted to get drunk and watch a football game.
