It's not really fair to compare straight numbers across decades because the are more people now than ever

And more tvs. They should be using percentages.

This population boom and surge in TV sales you all are referencing, did this just happen in the past year? It was the most watched halftime show in 30 plus years. Why isn't last year's show #2 and so on? To add to this, remember the halftime show received these numbers with the most lackluster Superbowl matchup we've seen in several years. There was a whole SR discussion regarding how this was the least appealing matchup there could have been this year with preferences for seeing Buffalo and Detroit. As evident by the poll in the thread below, many people just assumed it wasn't worth tuning in to watch. Most of the responders voted that they wouldn't watch.

I don't doubt that this sentiment was true even if some of the people who were uninterested decided to check it out later. Yet and still the halftime show produced the numbers that it did. Why?

I'd argue that this is EXACTLY what most of the country wanted to hear. Kendrick Lamar won 5 Grammy awards for the album that featured most of the songs he performed...just a week ago. Not a year ago or month ago, last week. Think about that. This is not the usual case of an artist performing their past hits. He was performing music that's still at the height of its popularity. He's literally doing songs that are hot right now, not months ago. Now. Has there ever been a MORE timely Superbowl appearance in history? Never, that I can remember, has the artist that won song of the year performed that Grammy winning song just days later at the Superbowl. The song of the year was performed at the TV event of the year mere days after being crowned.

As an aside, there was probably closed to 100 million viewers, (minus the get of my lawn living under a rock crowd) and most definitely most of the Super Dome audience joining the chorus to audibly sing "A minor" and we're doubting the numbers? Kendrick Lamar is what the culture is feeling. Numbers don't lie.
