Juwan Johnson is overrated (1 Viewer)

Miami runs the same offense with two little speed WRs. So, it's not like it can't or hasn't been done well before with similar types of players.
I don't think Miami runs this exact offense...before Tua went down (granted it was only 1 game), I want to say that they threw the ball more. <- maybe it is....but it doesn't feel like it.

Over rated or over hyped?

He’s was an UDFA WR (converted to TE) who is now 28 years old. I’d say he’s way more over hyped and a never was, a JAG at best. He is a legend in some fans minds because they believe every UDFA can be Pierre Thomas.

We don't have the personel to run a run heavy offense.

We're built like a team that wants to spread the field and attack the defense but we're running a scheme that focuses on pounding the rock.

Scheme - team mismatch

But whatever
We can, but our team currently constructed will only get you so far.

Moreau was definitely overrated as a signing, he is pretty much identical to Trautman but was heralded as a big upgrade when he came to the Saints.

2021 Trautman - 263 yards, 2 TD
2022 Trautman - 207 yards, 1 TD
2023 Moreau - 193 yards, 1 TD

Perry is showing why he was a 6th round pick despite the hype.

Miller, who really knows, he's never on the field.
I’m still confused by Perry as he has made plays when on the field. I’ve read that he’s bad during practice and has been in the doghouse. 🤷
Overrated? Like by who? Nobody thinks he’s special
Plenty on this board have thought he’s something special.

Both offenses are from the Shanhan/Kubiak tree. Certainly they call plays a bit different, there are some different wrinkles, and Miami probably throws more than we do, but it's still the same scheme. My only point is that the scheme can be adjusted to the personnel you have so you don't have to exactly match the personnel they have in San Francisco to effectively run this scheme. Miami is an example of a different way to do it. And I would argue that a good OC might have a style they want to play, but they adjust that to the players they have.

In the case of the Saints, it's probably smart to go run heavy since our very questionable OL is much better at run blocking than they are at pass blocking and if you show enough run it means you can throw the ball with play action to help protect an OL that is bad in pass protection.

A few people were hyping Johnson but I don't think anyone thought he was the next Kelce or Kittle. Johnson showed flashes, but he's inconsistent as a pass cathcher and has never really developed as a blocker. He also fit better into the old scheme. He lacks the blocking skills to really fit into what Kubiak is doing with the TEs. But, a lot of that is that all the TEs are being kept in to block or chip which means they aren't going to get much in the way of opportunities int the passing game. Especially considering how much we run the ball.

As far as Perry, I think he got over hyped on a very small sample size last year. He made some plays but he didn't consistently show up and if you are going to get playing time, you have to consistently show up. That's especially true because the way Kubiak runs the offense, the 3rd WR doesn't get many snaps and very few targets in during those snaps. In the Payton offense we ran a lot of 3, 4 and even 5 WR sets so there were a lot more opportunities and it wasn't as important to play consistently because there were more opportunites.

There is also the fact that Perry keeps showing up on the injury report with a hand or hamstring injury.

Good points.

I admit I bought into a little bit of the Johnson hype.

Makes sense on the Kubiak system not being conducive for what skillset Johnson does have.

Still hopeful for Perry.

We don't attack the middle of the field much because our best receivers are little guys and we aren't targeting our tight ends. Kubiak must fix this asap. It will make life easier in Shaheed and Olave if we get the TE's involved.
