Juwan Johnson is overrated (2 Viewers)

We also don't have the personnel to run a spread attack. We have Olave and Shaheed. After them, our wide receiver depth chart takes a nose dive.
That's alot of teams after WR2

Our 2 top WRs ARE NOT MT/TQS/??? Built WRs that we can rely on to block CBs to support the run - they're speed guys

We have Kamara that can spread out wide - to the slot and be just as effective a route runner/pass catcher

Johnson is a pass catching TE that isn't effective because he's lining up tight trying to block.

We have hill that can line up almost anywhere.

The only thing that we don't have is a line. But with all that up there ^^^ the last thing we should be trying to do is line em up and pound the rock.

But that's the direction we want to go so...like I said whatever.

Johnson is not the only player that we tend to overrate during the start of training camp and realize they're average at best. We could also include A.T. Perry, Kendre Miller, and Moreau. And then we draft players like Penning whose an undisciplined road rage type OT. Again, it's not just Johnson
Moreau was definitely overrated as a signing, he is pretty much identical to Trautman but was heralded as a big upgrade when he came to the Saints.

2021 Trautman - 263 yards, 2 TD
2022 Trautman - 207 yards, 1 TD
2023 Moreau - 193 yards, 1 TD

Perry is showing why he was a 6th round pick despite the hype.

Miller, who really knows, he's never on the field.

TEs are used for blocking especially when you're line can't hold up for 5 seconds without help.

He doesn’t really have a role in this offense because we are more run heavy. Moreau and Hill (when healthy) are going to get the bulk of the snaps. I’m not saying he would set the world on fire elsewhere, he just isn’t going to have a consistent impact on our weekly results.

Yeah, you aren't going to get a lot of impact from your TEs when they are often kept in to chip to help the Tackles or just straight out kept in to block the Edge the way they were against Dallas. And that's never going to be Johnson's game.

But, I don't think he would be more than average even if he were used the way he needs to be used. He was on a trajectory to be a good player two years ago, but that progress stalled last year and this year.

We need somebody like George kittle

There are like 30 other NFL teams thinking the same thing. Problem is there aren't many guys like that and colleges don't turn them out because of all the teams that run spread offenses. There aren't a lot of good TEs coming out of college and even fewer that can block in line. In addition, a lot of guys who have the size, speed, and quickness to be good TEs end up being DEs because teams covet pass rush for good reason.

We don't have the personel to run a run heavy offense.

We're built like a team that wants to spread the field and attack the defense but we're running a scheme that focuses on pounding the rock.

Scheme - team mismatch

But whatever

I mean, we seemed to have good enough personnel in the first two games and they managed to score 24 against Atlanta. Certainly they could use some bigger WR for YAC and blocking, but outside of that the personnel seems to be working fine in all but the Philly game where the middle of the OL got destroyed by Carter after McCoy went out.

Kendre Miller hasn't played so we have no idea how good he is but many wanted to cut him so I don't think he was overrated. And I don't think anyone ever thought that Moreau was more than an average TE. But, I agree that people's expectations for Perry were way too high.

Miami runs the same offense with two little speed WRs. So, it's not like it can't or hasn't been done well before with similar types of players.

His situational awareness during an almost critical third down by being out of bounds was horrible. That's a rookie mistake and cost us an opportunity to extend a drive.
