King Cake rant (3 Viewers)

In all honesty, king cake is an overrated pastry.

I have to agree. I've honestly never understood the hype. I do occasionally like a king cake from the Randazzo family but that's more nostalgia for me since I grew up in The Parish and the only king cakes we ever got were from Randazzo's until I was around 18. The rest to me vary from bad to meh.

I freely admit that I'm not a candy or cake person, but I just don't get the obsession with king cakes. Is it just that it's a good excuse to eat a bunch of sweets for month?

I will say that actual French king cakes are very good. But, to the extent I like sweets, I prefer things like Napoleons, pies, and tarts over cake.

I think this is why many (including myself) are snotty about ONLY having king cake in season
Evaluating it as JUST a pastry misses most of the point
It’s like trying to separate whole turkey from thanksgiving

We, in this country, have so few ritual celebrations that I feel it’s important to hang onto the few we have

The ritual part I get because I too read my Joseph Campbell. It's also why I get at least one king cake every year, eat Turkey (which I don't like) on Thanksgiving, and celebrate Christmas despite being an atheist.

That's the post stuffed king cake diabetes talking.
I'm not diabetic and while I am not a cake fan I do like a good chocolate and Red Velvet cake but King Cake is pure sugar and I just don't like the grainy texture it has. I prefer a good pumpkin , apple, or most fruit pies for a dessert.

We can revisit this again in a couple months. In the meantime ..... THE KNIFE STAYS IN THE BOX!

Yeah, ever since the initial euphoria wore off, I haven’t been able to get down with their pies (consistency and quality have fallen from when I used to eat them before wrestling practice in High School).

I cant imagine these King Cakes are better than the pies, but who knows, maybe a broken clock is right twice a day.

My 15 year old is quite the baker, and started making home made king cakes a year ago. We invited folks over for a king cake party last year and we had about a dozen king cakes that we got at the king cake hub and brought back to Houston. We slipped her home made king cakes in among the Randazzo’s, Haydel’s, Hi-Ho, Rouses, etc. and people were blown away by how good it was (the secret is that is was fresh unlike all the other king cakes that had been made a day prior to being delivered to the king cake hub, and then were with me for a day as we traveled home to Houston).

This year a couple of friends asked her if she could make them king cakes for the season, and that they would pay her (one offered $40 the other $50). Now she has it in her head that she is going to turn our home kitchen into her personal bakery, and sell king cakes from now through Mardi Gras.

She asked me how much she should charge and I just told her to cover her costs and add $20 for labor. That might be low, but what do I know, and what does it matter to her since it’s all under the table anyway.

Kids and king cakes are wild. Mix the two together and you have a damn good time on your hands.
