Klint Kubiak on starting Spencer Rattler: “Looking forward to watching him let his natural ability take over” (1 Viewer)

Kind of. The financial side of having a cheap QB you want to play with another one you don't want to play that has a cap number of $50 million is tough. Sean Payton went through that this season and they are carrying that $53 million in dead money and playing their rookie. Everyone thought they were insane to do it and it would be much more difficult to do that here.
Agreed…. But you at least have an option. Without that rookie QB on a rookie deal that can be your realistic future…. You don’t even have that option.

Yeah it was one of the few times I really wanted a player, and also thought the Saints would be smart to maybe lean on Kubiaks insights into drafting a QB that fit the system considering he was part of the staff that drafted Purdy in SF.

I don't think I had the thread, but may have commented in a few about him leading up to it. I'm excited, very excited.

Just need a big WR w/ a large catching radius. Olave/Shaheed are more in the juice wells mold, but if you can get him a guy w/ a Legette build, they'll make wonderful music together.
Kubiak wasn't part of the staff that drafted Purdy. Purdy was drafted in 22 and KK was on SF's staff starting in 23

Have a look at his highlights…. You can count on one hand how many of his big plays came from the pocket and on schedule. He’s either making time, running for his life, or doing both while keeping his focus down field and giving his guy a chance to make a play. He was literally made for this system and this moment.

Which is the exact reason I think he got the start over JH. Is he used to running for his life

At the time and in that situation…. Yeah. We didn’t have Carr or Rattler or Jake then. We do now. Context matters. Taysom was our best option to win games…. and while JW was a cool dude…. He was no where near the answer at QB to win us the division.

I could be banging the table for Taysom to be the starter at QB now…. And at this point if he were not injured…. It would have merit. But I’m not doing that. Spencer gives us the best chance, and has the potential to be the future…. I want what I think is best for the team. Full stop.
I was being a bit tongue in cheek there. :9:

Kubiak was in Denver when Purdy was drafted.

He spent 1 season in SF.

Touché, I thought he was there that year. Perhaps it was Brian Griese I was thinking about.
I think it’s just a common misconception on these forums that Kubiak spent years under Shanahan.

I thought the same until I looked something up about him on Wikipedia an few weeks ago and then realised not only was he only at SF for 1 year but Payton was the one that got rid of him in Denver.

Boxing trainer Angelo Dundee* once said

“If you have a young kid with the potential to be a great fighter you don’t put him in the ring with a great fighter”

Meaning you can forever ruin someone if you throw them in a situation they aren’t ready for

How many rookie/young QBs we think of as total busts would have had completely different careers if they didn’t start for another year or two?

*Dundee was Muhammad Ali’s trainer. Ali, then Cassius Clay wanted to fight Sonny Liston two years before they actually fought. If Clay had gotten in the ring with Liston when he first wanted to he would have been destroyed. He wasn’t ready then. Two years later he was

I’m excited to see what Rattler can do and really hope this is our Tom Brady moment and Rattler is our next 12-15 year pro bowl starter

I hope he’s ready

I'd guess Rattler got the nod because he brings more mobility than Jake. He'll be running for his life.
He's the more talented of the two, and by the coach's admissions, he has been consistently showing his ability playing on the scout team.

Rattler is also Kubiaks developmental prospect.
