June 2nd is officially here, increasing the odds of a Marshon Lattimore trade. For those unfamiliar with the workings of the NFL salary cap, teams can trade a player after June 1st and spread the dead money on said player’s contract over two years. This effectively means that teams can more easily create cap space and incentivize moves in what would otherwise be the dead part of the offseason.
Several reliable reporters have covered the possibility of a Marshon Lattimore trade for months now, but nobody expected it to happen before June 2nd. According to OverTheCap, trading Lattimore early in the offseason would’ve resulted in a loss of $16.6 million in much-needed cap space. However, now New Orleans can clear just south of $4 million in cap space, so Lattimore’s days with the team could be coming to an end. According to Bleacher Report‘s Matt Holder, the Jaguars could make a move for the veteran.
Of course, Jacksonville won’t be the only team interested in a Marshon Lattimore trade. There aren’t enough good cornerbacks to go around in today’s pass-happy NFL and Lattimore could be a key contributor for a few contenders or could help solidify some rocky secondaries throughout the league.

If the Saints are open to trading Lattimore it makes sense to have waited until June 2nd passed to open discussion on the subject. With that date now being passed the next important date is prior to week 1 of the regular season which is when the Saints will be required to pay Latt a guaranteed option bonus of $13.79 Million. Trading him before week 1 could transfer that responsibility to the new team. This move would also reduce the dead money and allow the Saints to spread it over the 2024 and 2025 seasons. If the Saints were to make this move in a trade for future draft pick(s) they could clear almost $4 million in cap space. The trade deadline is on November 5th, 2024, after the completion of Week 9. I'd prefer to see a player for player trade filling a need for the Saints who can contribute in 2024 and beyond completed before the start of training camp this year.

Moving Lattimore could make sense for New Orleans, which just selected CB Kool-Aid McKinstry in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft and also has corners Paulson Adebo and Alontae Taylor on the roster and needs long-term salary cap space.
Where could Lattimore land? The Las Vegas Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings could be among the contenders interested in the veteran CB.

I think so. The Saints are busy digging out of a massive salary cap hole and they clearly saw Lattimore as one of the few pieces they are willing to move so if the situation presents itself they should go for it. If they do not make the trade this year it may only be harder to move him in 2025 and there is no guarantee that he would be willing to modify his contract to help the Saints with the cap after they already dangled him out there for a trade.
