Lest ye forget, another DA bungle: losing Aaron Glenn, Ryan Nielsen, and Kris Richard (1 Viewer)

Allen has a lot of faults as a losing coach. Losing Nielsen, Richard and Glenn isn’t the cause of this team losing.

Glenn took a promotion to run his own defense a season before Allen became HC. Nothing could be done to stop Glenn from leaving for a higher position while Allen was DC over a defense that DA developed and maintained.

Nielsen also took a promotion to become standalone DC. D-Line pass rush was still inconsistent or nonexistent while Nielsen was over the D-Line here.

Richard was the only coach that was let go and his termination improved the secondary a lot in turnovers. We have over twice the amount of INTs that we had last year with Richard running the secondary and defense. The blown coverages at inopportune times still happened during Richard’s tenure as co-DC/DB coach. Richard isn’t coaching anyone at the moment.

Since Nielsen's departure from New Orleans...

The alcons have a 24.3% pressure rate. (14.6% in 2022)
The Saints have a 19.0% pressure rate. (17.5% in 2022)

The alcons have 26 sacks. (21 in 2022)
The Saints have 19 sacks. (48 in 2022)

The alcons have allowed 17 passing touchdowns. (26 in 2022)
The Saints have allowed 16 passing touchdowns. (17 in 2022)

The alcons allow 3.9 yards per rush. (4.4 in 2022)
The Saints allow 4.5 yards per rush. (4.5 in 2022)

The alcons have allowed 4 rushing touchdowns. (15 in 2022)
The Saints have allowed 9 rushing touchdowns. (14 in 2022)

The Saints have a "we're old and need more talent in the trenches" problem.

Which is where DA messed up, he never should have made them co-DCs. If he made Nielsen the DC I imagine he'd still be here.

Nieslen was leaving regardless, he wanted to have and call his own defense.

The only thing I think Nielsen is bummed about was being so quick to sign with the alcons. Payton was traded to Denver a few days later, and I imagine Nielsen would have been one of Payton's first calls given how much Payton liked Nielsen.

His inability to retain quality coaches is yet another reason why I'm counting the days until we have a new HC. That co-DC shenanigan was a big backfire, and the sign of someone who lacks conviction.
FIRE dennis allen and derek carr, as long as they are part of the team the saints will continue to go down, the players do not respect either one.

In my opinion, with the exception of Neilson, the replacements are much better. Also, when it comes to defense I actually trust Allen completely.

The Falcons are basically playing the same easy schedule the Saints are this year. Stats for the entire division are going to be skewed on defense with all the bad quarterbacks on the schedules. We will see how Neilson does over time. The Falcons are not good on defense but did spend on Bates and a few spots in free agency including two former Saints. I don't fault Allen for losing Neilson as his only real option was to be full d coordinator here which is not really running the defense with Allen staying here and being this weird co-d coordinator. If anything I fault the Saints for having co-defensive coordinators and not just making a decision for the better coach for the long term of the franchise.

He didn’t wanna give up control, and lost some good coaches.

Kris Richard isn't even coaching anywhere right now. And Glenn and Nielsen still have a lot to prove. Regardless, who are these wildly successful coaches who never lose good assistants to other teams?
