let's just all agree that the 90s was the golden age for rap/hip-hop music... (1 Viewer)

90's was good but not even close to the 80's!!
LL Cool J
Run DMC (I could just stop there)
Kool Moe Dee
Fat boys
Whodini
Salt n Pepa
Beastie Boys (biggest album in 80's)
Eric B and Rakim
and the often imitated but ever duplicated 2 LIVE CREW!!

Ur welcome!!:):)

i think you missed the point

sure they started in the 80s but the Beastie Boys made their best music in the 90s...that's not even debatable

and there is no rule that says a band had to start in the 90s...this is my thread
But their illinest music was from the 80s and that’s the true metric of beastie music

Beastie Boys are well placed in both the 80s and the 90s. They released two records in the 1980s and obviously fit there, but Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty are 90s albums. I don't think you can have a discussion of 90s hip-hop and not spend a minute on them.

Facts is facts bro.

you could also argue that Paul's Boutique sounds more like 90's hip-hop than what was going on in the 80s...and i mean, 1989

Ok thank you.

My first intro to rap was Mantronix. Recently heard an interview with Mannie Fresh who said that alot of his music ( NO Bounce ) was born out of listening to Mantronix. IF no one know who that is, Just go listen to off Mantronix The Album ( Fresh is the Word ) or Mantronix In Full Effect. ( Join me Please or In Full Effect )

then to

Boogie Down Productions- My Philosphy. MUST LISTEN TO.

Run DMC ( Jam master Jay my fav cut on that one ) followed by King of Rock followed by Raisin Hell....yeah you really could. Peter Piper. Ahhh man that is another where the WHOLE ALBUM was just great.

Everyone needs to listen to Public Enemy Yo! bum rush the Show

98 Olds ( You gonna get yours ) is a !@@#$@# jam. "Awwwwwwww Chuck they out to get us man....."

Whodini- 5 min of funk or Friends is probably one of their better known hits, but Im a Hoe is again, the jam.

Eric B/Rakim. Paid in Full- that whole album can be listened to ( Chinese arithmetic is instrumental iirc ) and Microphone Fiend is a must on any playlist.

I think what we know from the 80s produced the 90s music. There wasnt much ( if any) "gansta rap" in the same manner in which NWA brought to the table. It was more stories, feel good raps until the Moe D/Cool J beefs started and even then , the rhymes were more wit and word play than death threats and killing.

I liked the lyrical work of Notorious B.I.G. for sure. He was witty. ( anytime we see someone in a black Yukon we assume its Arizona Ron).

I agree with the younger folks that the 90s produced more "diversity" from your basic rap structure to hardcore, gansta, hip-hop, reggae, with much more intricate rhymes. Very intelligent, very smart rhyming styles that were appealing. ( as opposed to the generic 80s raps of having fun/good time/girls/bragging etc )

ah what a great thread started here. Im an 80s rap fool. Raised on Run DMC, 2 Live Crew, Eric B and Rakim, Beastie Boys, EPMD, 3rd Bass, Kool G Rap and Polo, Kid n Play. They led to Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul....

Great music for sure

and that's really the point of my thread...this isn't about who is the best...

the 90s expanded the genre in so many directions that it can't be denied

you're sounding like that one Becky that claims she loved the Beastie Boys and can only name the three songs that got radio play in 80s

Brass Monkey still gets played in bars today.

I think that would be the metric. Dont hear much from Pauls Boutique and i would argue Ill Communication was the better of the two. But thats me and i would always fall back to what i grew up on.

Check Your Head is the Beastie Boys' best album and i will fight guidomerkinsrules if you say otherwise
