It's 9:45 PM eastern time and I'm watchin' the sun come up in Africa at 3:45 AM??? Wow that's early...is it because it is so far south and summer there? I guess similar to Northern Canada in May?

No. Southern Africa is only about as far south of the equator as Mexico City is north of it. Not even that far, for the most part. So I'm not sure why it'd be like that. Perhaps the time it's giving is an hour off, and it's really 4:45? That would be more normal during the summer in a place that does not use Daylight Savings Time.
