Loomis' one unforgivable decision (92 Viewers)

Howie Roseman , Tex Schramm , there have been quite a few GMs that didn't play organized football. And it sure didn't matter that Loomis didn't play football from 2006- 2018
You're way off base
Dude, I see your posts all the time, correcting everyone like you have superior wisdom. Take a break. You do it to EVERYONE.

Guess you just don't want anyone correcting you when you're wrong. And that's not superior thinking??? SMH

Once again an example of the devastation that the “no call” caused this franchise. Had PI been called, the Saints probably win the Super Bowl and Brees retires on top. That changes how the Saints, and Payton, approach that draft. All of a sudden, drafting Lamar Jackson could work seeing how the offense was going to have to be rebuilt anyways. It would have been a waste to draft Lamar otherwise, hints why we did not because he did not fit the offensive scheme at all.

Hey, I don't know if anyone has pointed this out before, but apparently Mickey Loomis has never played football?

I think this should be repeated several times in the same thread for complete clarity.

I know there are many threads on decisions under Mickey Loomis that have set our team back. But one BY FAR is the worst and most unforgivable.

When we traded 2 first round picks to move up in the first round to pick Marcus Davenport over Lamar Jackson.

Everyone on the TV was shocked. They all thought we made that bold trade move for one reason only, for a successor to Drew Brees.

Instead we wound up with a DE with low ambition that could not stay healthy and eventually not resigned.

Jackson has been a multiple NFL MVP candidate.

It's very hard for me to get over that move.

Loomis was a basketball point guard for a small college. Why in the world does he have the right to determine what a FOOTBALL team needs for success. Sean Payton propped him up big time. I would not be surprised if Loomis was part of why Sean eventually wanted out.

If he had good judgement, he would realize that a basketball player is not a good decision maker for an NFL team.

HIRE A FOOTBALL GM LOOMIS, WE DESERVE BETTER!

1. It was Payton that didn’t want Jackson. And quite honestly, most of the league didn’t evaluate him properly when you think about it. Guy should have been picked first.

2. Loomis is far from the only GM that didn’t play football. Many haven’t. Research it. You don’t have to play football to be able to learn football and/or how to run a team, especially if you have a high intelligence level.

They make trade charts for a reason. According to those charts he made a fair trade. Davenport was worth the spot we picked him according to consensus. Injuries suck, and we've been cursed by them since Davenport it seems. Don't know what to do about it. Maybe it's Loomis' fault for that, but I don't mind my front office being aggressive.

PS Jackson was picked 32nd. A ton of teams passed on him for other players.

That was Payton not Loomis…thread derailed

Have to admit, that really was a head scratcher in the moment and still is. For the life of me, I still don’t understand how we got a “do over”, from the Mahones situation, and we doubled down with not taking the most electrifying QB in the draft?!?!

I'd put not firing DA after the 2023 at the top of the list. DA going over to Arthur Smith and apologizing after the last game, while Rizzi was about to put Smith in a full nelson.

Rizzi went to midfield and was ready for ALL the smoke. 😂

That wasn't a Loomis decision, that was a Payton decision.
That's part of the problem. At a certain point, Mick should have looked past Drew and Sean and said what's our next move. No player is bigger than the team.

The only mistakes that is unforgivable is how he handle Post-Payton. No godly reason why he didn't reset the cap and start a soft rebuild then is beyond my understanding
This. This and only this. You can do the hindsight is 50/50 thing all day on specific draft picks or Free Agent misses but they can't all be homeruns. That's part of the job. But your main job as a GM in the NFL is the stability and health of the franchise. You have to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. SP didn't want any part of a rebuild so I cut Loomis some slack on SP's last year. He didn't have much of a choice but to go all in with a pair of 7s. But when Drew and SP were both gone and they were replaced with Winston and DA, Loomis moved all in on a stone cold bluff.

A lot of people around here thought it was the right move at the time. They would point to the talent on the roster and say now is not the time to blow it up. People honest to god thought we could walk the yard and win it all with DA and Winston. When you would point out that Winston isn't that great people would say that he's basically Peyton Manning and he's been attending Harvard for QBs. Remember that argument? People twisted and turned doing pretzel logic trying to justify something that was clearly a mistake.

I just looked this up - Lamar Jackson was the 32nd pick. That means 31 other teams passed on him as well. It definitely sucks and looks moronic in hindsight, but we weren't the only ones. IIRC Lamar just came off a beat down against LSU in the bowl game and maybe his stock cooled a bit?
