I can remember the 250-ish page "Suh thread" where I swear I read posts describing what was on his dinner plate when he visited here during free agency that year. Can't beat that kind of entertainment with a stick, ha.

As for the OP, I don't think I can argue with the trade up for Davenport being the absolute worst draft move during the Payton era, regardless of who actually pulled the trigger on it. I guess he thought he was still on a heater from trading back into the '09 draft for a punter. Turned out to be Morstead.

2009ring, I can't fuss at the organization for not trading up in 2017 to pick Mahomes unless it had solid information that Reid really liked him or that Buffalo was looking to trade out of 10, or unless Sean truly tipped his hand on Mahomes before the draft. Sometimes other teams trade up to pick the player you want. It happens. I do not believe the story that Mahomes didn't want to be drafted by the Saints (why not?) and told Reid that the Saints were going to pick him at 11 so Kansas City better move up.

And I remember well the commentary on television when we made the trade up to 14. The talk was that we had moved up to take Jackson. It was a surprise when the Davenport selection was announced. Jackson was the first of the true running quarterbacks who showed that his legs could be a weapon. There was concern about his accuracy--Bill Polian, whom I respect greatly, suggested he should play wide receiver. Baltimore's front office has been playing chess rather than checkers for many years. Teams failed to understand that Jackson could play the position differently and his athleticism easily outweighed the accuracy concerns. (Also, I want to say that Jackson refused to run the 40, which hurt his draft status.)

And sometimes God watches over drunks and NFL general managers. In 2008, we made a huge trade offer to move up to pick defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, which fortunately was not accepted--over the years, our desperation to acquire defensive linemen has far exceeded our ability to evaluate them. And of course, we were incredibly close to signing Deshaun Watson.

A lot of people don’t know that the actual selection meeting is usually a few steps ahead of the TV broadcast, and a lot of times when you hear the commentators acting like they are predicting the pick, it’s because they already know it.

Well, with how excited the group on TV was talking about how great of a situation our team was going to be for Lamar, working behind Drew and with Sean, I figured it was a slam dunk. They sounded like it was already done.

I don't want Loomis making important decisions re: the team any longer but I don't fault him for the Davenport bungle.....I think CSP and Ireland share in the blame for that one.....they reached for a player that had insane measureables, said player couldn't stay healthy.....

It's magnified when you trade up and waste picks when the player doesn't pan out.

That's why I hate trading up, but they'll probably do it again.
