Loomis' one unforgivable decision

I know there are many threads on decisions under Mickey Loomis that have set our team back. But one BY FAR is the worst and most unforgivable.

When we traded 2 first round picks to move up in the first round to pick Marcus Davenport over Lamar Jackson.

Everyone on the TV was shocked. They all thought we made that bold trade move for one reason only, for a successor to Drew Brees.

Instead we wound up with a DE with low ambition that could not stay healthy and eventually not resigned.

Jackson has been a multiple NFL MVP candidate.

It's very hard for me to get over that move.

Loomis was a basketball point guard for a small college. Why in the world does he have the right to determine what a FOOTBALL team needs for success. Sean Payton propped him up big time. I would not be surprised if Loomis was part of why Sean eventually wanted out.

If he had good judgement, he would realize that a basketball player is not a good decision maker for an NFL team.

HIRE A FOOTBALL GM LOOMIS, WE DESERVE BETTER!
Stop with the lamar jackson stuff. Baltimore took a tight end at 25 before trading back into the first round to pick jackson. So every other GM in the league passed on him as well.

Im not here to defend ML but I think the problem with your post is that Loomis did not and still does not make personnel decisions. The Saints are not structured that way. Loomis gets them under contract and negotiates with agents. That was Payton and then Allen who made the personnel decisions. I agree though with the premise on how bad a decision that was back in 2018.

The next horrible decision was the 2022 draft and what they did there as well.

This is the root of the problem: we have a football account masquerading as a football GM.

Loomis is on fire today, man! I need a thread about what he had for breakfast the day he hired Dennis Allen next.
I can remember the 250-ish page "Suh thread" where I swear I read posts describing what was on his dinner plate when he visited here during free agency that year. Can't beat that kind of entertainment with a stick, ha.

As for the OP, I don't think I can argue with the trade up for Davenport being the absolute worst draft move during the Payton era, regardless of who actually pulled the trigger on it. I guess he thought he was still on a heater from trading back into the '09 draft for a punter. Turned out to be Morstead.

2009ring, I can't fuss at the organization for not trading up in 2017 to pick Mahomes unless it had solid information that Reid really liked him or that Buffalo was looking to trade out of 10, or unless Sean truly tipped his hand on Mahomes before the draft. Sometimes other teams trade up to pick the player you want. It happens. I do not believe the story that Mahomes didn't want to be drafted by the Saints (why not?) and told Reid that the Saints were going to pick him at 11 so Kansas City better move up.

And I remember well the commentary on television when we made the trade up to 14. The talk was that we had moved up to take Jackson. It was a surprise when the Davenport selection was announced. Jackson was the first of the true running quarterbacks who showed that his legs could be a weapon. There was concern about his accuracy--Bill Polian, whom I respect greatly, suggested he should play wide receiver. Baltimore's front office has been playing chess rather than checkers for many years. Teams failed to understand that Jackson could play the position differently and his athleticism easily outweighed the accuracy concerns. (Also, I want to say that Jackson refused to run the 40, which hurt his draft status.)

And sometimes God watches over drunks and NFL general managers. In 2008, we made a huge trade offer to move up to pick defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, which fortunately was not accepted--over the years, our desperation to acquire defensive linemen has far exceeded our ability to evaluate them. And of course, we were incredibly close to signing Deshaun Watson.

I’ll never forget the letdown of that moment.

A lot of people don’t know that the actual selection meeting is usually a few steps ahead of the TV broadcast, and a lot of times when you hear the commentators acting like they are predicting the pick, it’s because they already know it.

Well, with how excited the group on TV was talking about how great of a situation our team was going to be for Lamar, working behind Drew and with Sean, I figured it was a slam dunk. They sounded like it was already done.

I’ll never forget the moment my heart sunk when I saw that doofus with the one dangling earring walking onto the stage. 😂

I don't want Loomis making important decisions re: the team any longer but I don't fault him for the Davenport bungle.....I think CSP and Ireland share in the blame for that one.....they reached for a player that had insane measureables, said player couldn't stay healthy.....

It's magnified when you trade up and waste picks when the player doesn't pan out.

That's why I hate trading up, but they'll probably do it again.

His mistake was giving Sean too much power over personnel.
He had no other choice his background was on the financial side. Once Sean won the Super Bowl he was the king at Airline dr.

I get the bad shivers whenever this team is projected to take a defensive end early in the draft.

Basketball player
I didn’t play college football but would have easily 1) reset the cap after Payton, 2) not be forced to ditch Allen when he was clearly not the guy, 3) avoided Derek Carr, and 4) not spend first rounders, including future assets, on raw upside prospects, and 5) made it a priority to get an young replacement for Brees as he started to show signs of decline. I know nothing about anything and yet I have no questions that I would have done those 5 things better. Random Saints fan shouldn’t have a better vision for this franchise than the current GM. His time here is up…and yet he’s still here, and with another lame duck coach to boot. I have no optimism for this franchise. I don’t blame every decent coaching prospect to avoid it like the plague.

AGAIN , it has been reported ad nauseam that the Davenport deal was ALL Payton's doing. You don't know how Loomis works. He's not the one making the picks, it's the scouting dept and the HC. Only when there is a disagreement does he step in and you can bet he more than not sides with the HC. So blame the HC and the scouting dept on the bad drafting
Loomis would have had the final say so, so ultimately the fault lies with him as well as SP
