I'm not a Tolkien scholar, but I did think was odd that Gandalf finds out Sauromon is looking to rule Middle Earth at this point but remains friends with him and trusts him in the Lord of the Rings.
I don't think that was Sarumon. Just another Istar. Even the showrunners allude that it isn't.

I do wish they'd been clear about that, because with the staff he held and the way did his hair/facial hair seemed like they were trying to portray a younger Christopher Lee as much as possible.

Well we don’t really know it’s Sauromon - they left the blue wizard stuff pretty ambiguous
Maybe they want to play with them more, or it’s just a manifestation of Gandalf still not remembering

But even if it is, the easy head canon is that the Dark Wizard has a come to Eru moment and humbly align with the forces of good to defeat Sauron in the great upcoming battle

Maybe I just assumed it was Sarumon and it wasn't. I don't tend to watch all the extras with the show runners so I missed that. He certainly seemed to e Sarumon the way he calling Gandalf old friend, etc. But, maybe he isn't. If he's not that I withdraw my criticism of that, but change it to say they should have done a better job of making it clear that it was not Sarumon. As Tenordas noted, he looked like a younger Christopher Lee from the Peter Jackson movies and the staff looked similar. But I guess that's my bias based on watching the Peter Jackson movies over and over again.

If it's not Sauromon then obviously my criticism is wrong and is based in my simply watching the Peter Jackson movies too many times. But, if it is Sauromon then I would not buy that Gandalf would fall for the sudden change of heart to the point that he fully trusts him and can't imagine that he would betray him.

And, at this point, once you confirmed The Stranger is Galdalf it's time to stop with the we are hiding who this character is stuff. I mean if I'm being totally honest, we all knew it was Gandalf by the middle of season 1 if not before so the whole thing became kind of pointless. Continuing that with another character would be a bad choice IMO. But, that is a quibble in an otherwise enjoyable show.

It's not up to the original Peter Jackson movies but no TV show has the time or budget to do that level of work and I still think they did a good job given that it is TV on a streaming system that most people get as a bonus when they were already going to have Prime.

S2 was okay-ish... I just think the script is mostly bad, and the actors don't have much to work with as a result. It is trying to come off very dramatic, but it's just not landing for me. And I think it is the script.

Anyway, the guy from S1 that everyone suspected was THAT guy... turned out to be... the guy everyone was guessing. Kinda disappointing there.
