Lost amongst todays mess, but we badly need a new punter (1 Viewer)

Is it just me or is Grupe literally getting roasted the least?

And no, this is not a "fire the kicker" post.....as pretty much every kicker in the history of eternity has missed a major FG at some point.

But it does seem like just about every "oh hey, that kick got missed" acknowledgment gets drowned out by:

- Our offensive line

- Our punter

- What happened to the defense in the 4th quarter?

- Pete Carmichael

- Jameis Winston didn't move the offense (well, except when he got them in FG range)

It's possible that people are giving him a general pass, since this is only the second time we've seen him miss outside of a long attempt in preseason that he barely missed (or in some cases, I think it's some of those "HAHAHAHA Lutz" chest beaters who seemed to think it was hilarious when Lutz got traded and made sure to create a thread when he missed a kick in week 1....citing that as evidence that we UNQUESTIONABLY kept the right guy.....and now they are a bit less chatty).

At the end of the day, I don't even know that making the kick would have guaranteed any kind of win.....as GB would have still had a minute to move down the field and get into FG range.....but just as Lutz did prior to the Minneapolis Miracle and immediately after the no-call, it's important to make the FG and hope for the best.
I think he gets a pass because he is a rookie kicker who should have never been in that position to begin with.

His stat’s yesterday were padded, Green Bay had holding calls on 3 punts in a row that really helped him out. Otherwise they should’ve had much better field position on last 3 punts
Penalty yardage doesn't get added to punting yardage stats totals, it only impacts the net yardage since those punts get shown as having no return.

Hedley had only one bad punt which was the first attempt that went for 38 yards to midfield. The other 5 punts was average-good field position landing between GB’s 35-15 yard lines. He also had a punt downed at the 5.

The field was terrible and caused a bunch of players to slip. That likely affected Hedley’s footing some too. Theres no real fault to blame Hedley for.

Edit: GB didn’t even score after Hedley’s punt to midfield on the first attempt. They were shutout 17-0 after most of Hedley’s punts. Hedley had no impact in causing this loss whatsoever.

Rookie coddling...it only affects Haener, Bresee and Grupe

It would be if it was accurate. He has shanked a punt in 2 games already, that is ridiculous. But hey, if he gets it ironed out that would be great.

29 yard punt against Carolina that was downed at the Carolina 35, absolutely TERRIBLE punt. Then the terrible punt yesterday.

He was much better against the Titans than the other two games.

Punting distance and hang time has been a big issue this season. Shanking punts is gonna come back to bite us sooner or later. Looks like we might have an issue at P and K.

Count me as not seeing Punter as a major concern.

Twice yesterday Hedley had to choke back on punts so they weren’t touchbacks. And one travelled only like 30 yards, landing at the 10 yard line. Those hurt net average, yet are effective punts.

For the season, he’s middle of the pack on distance and Top 8 on Inside the 20 punts. He’s also done a great holding FG attempts.

Do what? He had a 36 yard punt that landed at the GB 46 yard line and was downed there.

Against Carolina he did the same thing with a 29 yard punt letting them start at the Carolina 35. Two absolutely terrible punts putting the team in a terrible position. He was good against the Titans.

Never shoulda got rid of Morestead. Dude was still good and he's a Saint thru and thru.
Didn't Morstead retire briefly? I could be wrong but I'm almost certain that's why he was let go because he was going to retire and it saved us cap space at the time.

He was replaced for salary cap reasons......not as much production. Morestead may have contemplated retirement, but that wasn't why he left the Saints.

I'll agree with the 2nd half of your sentence........the 17-0 lead should have been more than enough. I can't totally get down with the notion of a free pass due to being a rookie, at least not in this particular instance. When you are chosen over a veteran kicker who was already in the building, the rookie excuse only goes so far. If he's truly better / more clutch than the guy we already had, then that's a kick he needs to make.

Anyway, moving on......hopefully he hits the next game-winner and many more.

What about the guy who was charged with but acquitted of rape? Araiza I think? He’s supposed to have a great leg.

Gilliken and Hadley both are bad imo.

He had 1 bad punt, every other one was downed inside the 20 or a good punt. Nothing to see here and Gilikin was way worse.
I do think it’s a lesser of two evils thing with those two. Blake regressed badly into shanking almost every kick.

I'd look into Ariza. He was pretty good. Hedley just doesn't instill confidence in me. His bent leg technique is just weird and decreases his hang time.
