Lost amongst todays mess, but we badly need a new punter (1 Viewer)

Count me as not seeing Punter as a major concern.

Twice yesterday Hedley had to choke back on punts so they weren’t touchbacks. And one travelled only like 30 yards, landing at the 10 yard line. Those hurt net average, yet are effective punts.

For the season, he’s middle of the pack on distance and Top 8 on Inside the 20 punts. He’s also done a great holding FG attempts.

This is a surprise to me. Most of punts are 15 feet high and seemly only go 35 yards.

Should’ve brought back Morestead for the farewell tour when we had the chance.

Agreed Hedley has not been super consistent. He's had a few "shank'ish" type punts in each game. Against the packers he had two short punts that set GB with good field position, a 38 yarder putting them on the GB 46 and a 35 yarder to the GB 44.

Middle of the pack? He is 24th out of 29 who qualify in gross and 22nd in net. His hang time is not good. He has only had 1 of 17 punts fair caught. I would feel more comfortable with Gillikin personally and did not think he was great.

Last year, Gillikin had an off year and was 21st in gross and 13th in net. He was 4th in inside the 20 and had 25 of 77 punts fair caught (5th).

His stat’s yesterday were padded, Green Bay had holding calls on 3 punts in a row that really helped him out. Otherwise they should’ve had much better field position on last 3 punts
Padded punts?

He did have 2 good punts yesterday that pinned GB deep, but otherwise, he gets no hang time. He's not very good at all. DA is 1 for 2 on the kicking decisions IMO.

We need a tryout. Anyone else available out there beside Gillikin?

Is it just me or is Grupe literally getting roasted the least?

And no, this is not a "fire the kicker" post.....as pretty much every kicker in the history of eternity has missed a major FG at some point.

But it does seem like just about every "oh hey, that kick got missed" acknowledgment gets drowned out by:

- Our offensive line

- Our punter

- What happened to the defense in the 4th quarter?

- Pete Carmichael

- Jameis Winston didn't move the offense (well, except when he got them in FG range)

It's possible that people are giving him a general pass, since this is only the second time we've seen him miss outside of a long attempt in preseason that he barely missed (or in some cases, I think it's some of those "HAHAHAHA Lutz" chest beaters who seemed to think it was hilarious when Lutz got traded and made sure to create a thread when he missed a kick in week 1....citing that as evidence that we UNQUESTIONABLY kept the right guy.....and now they are a bit less chatty).

At the end of the day, I don't even know that making the kick would have guaranteed any kind of win.....as GB would have still had a minute to move down the field and get into FG range.....but just as Lutz did prior to the Minneapolis Miracle and immediately after the no-call, it's important to make the FG and hope for the best.
He barely missed on a 45 yard field goal on a field that was absolute dog sheet.

Yes Grupe gets a pass on his first missed field goal of the season.
