McCray & Gay signings (1 Viewer)

If Samuel was a product of the system, what was Gay (and he was a backup)? I hope that Gay is an upgrade over David (how can he not be), but I have my reservations that he is a bug difference maker. I like the McCrary signing. Overall, I think Samuel or Sheppard was what we needed for the secondary though, to actually provide a solid upgrade.

Sheppard may still be possibility if the Eagles are truely shopping him. My take is other than Samuel, all of the other legit "high priced" difference makers were either franchised or re-signed.

You guys are putting way to much stock into Lito Shepperd. There is a strong chance that the Eagles have no desire to deal him to a team they see as a major threat to them in the playoffs or getting to the playoffs. No reason to get all up in arms if we don't get this guy. I'm sure we've talked about it, but I seriously doubt the Eagles want to trade him to another NFC team on the same level as them.

People forget that teams don't just trade players for fair value and thats that. What team they are trading with is also a major factor. Its like the Hall stuff. Lets put aside that he is totally overrated for a second. Theres noway the Falcons want to trade him to a division rival, espiecally a team as close to being division champs as us. That would just futher hinder their recovery.

I dont see how anybody can find something wrong with what Loomis and Co. has done so far, they are all good aquisitions and like many have posted, the market has gone up these contracts are not as big as one might think, McCrary had 10 sacks in 06 got another 8 or so last year, he started a few games in that time and was one of the top pass rushers out there aside from Justin Smith...we singed him to a 5 yr 20million dollar deal, simular to Justin Tuck, we paid him part time starter money, because he isnt just gonna come in to give Grand and or Smith a breather, he actually has a role on this team....how can you question that move?

The siging of Gay was a nice one also, he got the same money David got last year, he is a quality corner with Super Bowl rings and starting experience, no he is no Champ Bailey or Asante Samuel, but not alot of players are, he was one of the top available Corners on the free agent market, a market that was limited from the giddy up, there were 2 big name players, granted Asante did sign for less than we thought he would get, which is why so many people are upset we didnt get him...but I think we were looking for more bang for the buck and how can you argue that...we didnt sign scrubs, we signed guys with starting experience, production and youth....Great Job Loomis and Co.

My take

#1 You can not have too many good DEs.

#2 Five years is too long of a contract for a guy to ride the bench 80% of the snaps -- This guy is getting playing time one way or the other.

#3 Do not dismiss the fact that we signed a starting DE right before W. Smith is to get a contract.

#4 W. Smith is not a lock to get a new contract. See D Howard.

My guess, after thinking about the above points, is that the FO wanted to sign a good player to give them another good player for a rotation and at the same time giving them leverage/protection in case Will Smith wont re-sign. Win - Win

The Vilma trade was solid. It is a relatively low risk/high reward move. I like McCrary as a rusher and the price for those guys has skyrocketed, so he is an upside move as he could very well end up being a bargain 2 or 3 years down the road. If not, it is not a cap killer. I am not overly excited about Gay although I do see him as at least a slight improvement over David. With David's play and MM's injury, I just wish we would have been able to acquire a better CB. I hope they keep looking (either in FA or more likely the draft) to replace Shanle.

We are paying them that much because the 9ers and Raiders are overpaying players of far less talent and impact much more money than the Saints are paying Gay and McCray.

Lots of optimism here. You take upgrades any way you can get them.

Everything is relative. Some of our players are 3rd tier, and a 2nd tier player can be a definite upgrade on the cheap. The 1st tier upgrades are expensive and play havoc with your cap, making more general upgrading nearly impossible.

On the VERY optimistic side, I have a feeling that the lights may come on for Usama Young and/or Marvin Mitchell. If 1 or both of them develop, our defense could be a lot better than we think.

Don't laugh. Young is fast, and Mitchell is a real hitter.
