Medical reasons why Saints may have passed on RB Tyjae Spears (1 Viewer)

Dude absolutely crushed it today. 16 rushes for 75 yards (4.7 avg) and 4 receptions for 13 yards. Will very likely look to get a starting role going forward with Henry going down today.

Long term will tell if they were right or wrong to take Miller over him and Achane of Miami both of whom also had injury concerns.

I think no one should bump this thread until the guy has made it 3 seasons into the NFL. I doubt it’s any great surprise to anyone that he’s playing well. His long term health is the concern. If the doctors said he doesn’t have an ACL, you can see why he fell.

I don’t remember anyone thinking Miller was a real injury concern. He had an MCL sprain which is nothing.

Spears looks like a poor man's Kamara. He would have fit in well here.....especially if they deal Kamara in the next year or two.

His knee will likely have been replaced by staples and rubber bands at that point. He had massive medical red flags and the Saints obviously took him off their board, like many other teams did. Whether they're right or wrong will be a matter for the next few years to decide, no matter how much our Tulane boosters might be miffed by that point of view.

I hope the young man has a good career he can be proud of, and makes a life after football for himself and his family.

If he hadn't gone to a Louisiana school, everyone would be livid over the Saints taking a player with no ACL given the Saints history with injuries. And just because he's having success elsewhere doesn't mean he would have that here. Because with the current offense, he wouldn't. Truthfully Spears is better off where he's at.

The "if he hadn't gone to a Louisiana school" thing doesn't really hold water when everyone on here clamors for every LSU player in existence. And it's not like anyone would have lost sleep over it if 1) we didn't already need a solid backup RB, 2) the Saints didn't pick another RB while Spears was still on the board

Clearly the loss of an ACL (which magically wasn't reported or known by anyone until draft day) didn't effect him that badly as he recovered from that 2020 injury extremely well. Additionally, this whole breakdown from a Sports Physical Therapist kind of debunks the mental gymnastics that went into many fans justifying why it was a good thing that the Saints passed on him.

Spears has looked really good almost all year, he did seem to tire some this past week with all the featured usage after Henry went down...but was also getting drilled behind the line of scrimmage often.
Miller is still a big mystery box and I am not close to writing him off.
That said if we are going by a snap-shot of value, Spears looks like the better player and quite likely the better pick. Good for him.
