[Merged] Payton says Jameis has a chance to be Saints next starter (long term, not talking about the game this week) (1 Viewer)

So in other words, we want Winston to be here next year, but hindsight, we want him cheap so we don't start him. Loud and clear!
I think it was a combination of that (a lesson learned from Bridgewater playing last season), having given word/promise to Taysom prior to signing Jameis, and, of course, Payton actually believing in Taysom as he had said so many times that he did. Given that the Saints won't be in a very good position to draft a QB high in the draft (and you can't just rely on the ability to trade up as a guarantee), a competition between Taysom and Jameis next off-season would seem about as ideal as we could get (assuming Brees retires). I, personally, wouldn't be upset if the Saints end up in that position. I don't know if Jameis will want to sign back, but coach is doing the verbal work now to help try to swing Jameis the Saints' way.

Just my thoughts...If Taysom play poorly this coming game, I seriously believe Winston will have his chance the last two games. They need to find out who gives us the best chance going forward and into the playoffs.

That's good news. There is zero reason to just hand Taysom the starting job without a real competition. And I still think you add a draft pick at QB to the mix. Give yourself every chance.

I don't know... I think Payton might be alluding to that QB maybe out of reach in the draft with our current positioning and what QB we covet.

Probably unlikely we can draft a QB. Or just smokescreen

This is a good podcast. Still only a quarter of the way through, but so far discovered that Sean is responsible for bringing in the smoke and light machines 😆.

He also reminds the players that the invention of rap is from HIS generation. Said they weren't even born when some of the greats were doing it.

He said Taysom has the job now because he told him that if he came back, he would be the #2. The narrative that they aren't high on Jameis couldn't be further from the truth.

Both will have the opportunity to be the starter "the minute Drew leaves."

Made the players listen to Nat and Natalie King Cole duet.

His dad used to make him listen to Nat, Johnny Mathis and Frank Sinatra. Then he'd have to listen to his dad explain his rankings for each.

Thinks Teddy, Taysom and Jameis have leadership skills that transcends teams.

Wants Taysom to process quicker and get the ball out. Said other mobile QBs know when to run. Thought his 3rd down plays last week were great. Sees improvement in his pocket passing.

Jameis has performed exceptionally well considering the amount of time he's been with the team.

He blames himself for not crafting the 1st half of the Seattle game in a way that would help Teddy. Compared it to throwing him out there and giving him an obscure karaoke song to sing instead of something he already knows. "Coaches tend to complicate things."

Gonna keep listening.

If I’m Jameis Winston, I wouldn’t come back.

Why? Because you'd be upset that you weren't given the backup job after signing a 1mil contract to be the 3rd string quarterback?

If he leaves for a big contract we could get a 3rd round pick in 2022. I don't think he'll get that this offseason though.
