[Merged] Payton says Jameis has a chance to be Saints next starter (long term, not talking about the game this week) (3 Viewers)

I have serious doubts they can keep Jameis on the roster. They certainly aren't signing a QB to a 20+ mil contract or anything. The more competition the better if they can. If you can get Jameis on a backup level contract (less than 10 mil) that would be great. It's Taysom's job to lose in the offseason imo. I would feel better if they can go through the offseason planning on 1 QB. They are different QBs after all. If things fall apart with Taysom, having Jameis in your back pocket would be nice.

Regardless of what happens, both are too much of a gamble to not draft a QB though. They need to get as many QBs in the building as they can. I hope they don't make a hard commit to Taysom or Jameis beyond 2021. Of course they see more than me but both seem pretty risky from my view beyond 2021.

Why not? Payton is one the most fair coaches there is in the NFL. All one needs to do, is look at his history of affording free agent players, the opportuntiy to truly compete and EARN their position as a contributor. Either as a starter, or some reserve capacity. What else do you want?
i may be in the minority but i think Jameis would be a great fit fulltime in this offense. If given the chance to steer the ship. Hes not going anywhere, he has bought in you can see it on the sideline.

I think Payton is just planting the seed to a.) motivate Taysom to play better this year, and b.) to help coax Jameis to stay one more year as his insurance policy if Brees retires and Taysom ends up playing poorly even after a full off-season of work.

I just trust Payton's judgment a little less this week, so that coin is a little less shiny

The defensive performance stunk no doubt. But 0 points in the 1st half and going away from a incredible rushing attack (when the Eagles are in the bottom 10 against the run) is head scratching, like, really head scratching....

Winston would be crazy to go to another team next season. There’s already going to be a bunch of free agent QBs out there to compete with and he’s not getting big offers from any team better than we are. Plus he’d have a chance to stick it to Tampa twice a season. He’s got about 70% to taysom’s 30% to take over. CSP just loves the passing game too much to change styles permanently. His agent should tell him to follow the teddy road map.

While we did finish with 0 points we should have finished with 3. Lutz missed the kick, but we put him in a position to score 3.

If anything, this is the game against KC is where you actually want to start Jameis...We need offense to win this game. Can't rely on defense to hold KC under 21 points.

I'll take my chances on the risk of Winston throwing interceptions. Hell, at this point, it is no different than Taysom's fumbles.

Currently, Taysom is a low-tier game manager (at times).

There is a higher risk starting Winston, but the dude can get you 30+ points, 300+ yards.

Taysom got 300+ yards each of the last two games when you include what he did with his legs. Obviously, we'd like to see a 4 TD (rushing and passing combined) game from him and we may need that against the Chiefs.

Yeah, but still not good enough. Plus I think Lutz may be playing hurt....

Honestly, call me a troll for this comment, but I would actually like to see Semien compete with Taysom and Winston for the job. He hasn’t exactly gotten the best coaching in the NFL, but the talent is there. Is he a Diamond in the rough or just Tom Savage?

Stop trolling lol

The problem is that you probably lose the game with Winston too because he simply hasn't had enough time in this system to know it yet. There was no real offseason. That also means he hasn't had time to have some of his worst habits coached out of him.

So you start Winston, you probably lose anyway, and then what have you learned? No, I think you ride Taysom at this point. Make him earn it or lose it so that we have all the information we can for next season. We are in the playoffs and the #1 seed is likely gone. Homefield is meaningless this year too. It's just not that big of a deal if we lose a game or two more at this point.
