Mike Florio bringing the proper perspective to our organization: “Saints are a solid long-term destination for a new coach“ (57 Viewers)

"What do the Saints have? An owner who is patient and doesn’t meddle."

That I think is the biggest appeal to our HC spot. Gayle will give a lot of control and influence to our new HC. Decisions, coaching staff, roster (draft and FA), etc. That coupled with the fact that she was more than patient with DA when it was clear a lot sooner he was never gonna be the guy. There's a lot of owners that have pulled the plug after one year, hell even shorter in some cases. I think the biggest offer here is opportunity, and in spades.

Pro football Talk Iink

Saving nfl media journalism with this perfectly reasonable take.

Nonsense, Florio was talking like he hadn't even looked at the numbers and was basing everything off of prior years. The other guy had looked at them and recognized the problems with our aging players that have big cap numbers that can't be cut without making the cap worse. We actually gain a tiny bit of cap space cutting Carr, but we'd go around $10m deeper if we cut Jordan, Davis and Mathieu.

And on top of that, they never actually talked about the team getting any better, just getting compliant with the cap. So no, Florio isn't providing a reasonable take, he's talking like a typical national media guy who doesn't know the details.

EDIT: Seems I just watched the video. More after I read the article. Should be fun.

EDIT 2: Nope, nothing really to add. Gayle is a fine owner and certainly doesn't meddle, but like he said most don't. He gives some credit to Mickey on building good teams in the past that most believe belongs to Payton. And you can't have it both ways. If Payton left us with a bad cap in 2021 then he gets credit for the teams he built too. If it was Loomis that built the teams, then he's responsibly for the cap from day 1.

Just because it says something favorable about the organization doesn't mean it's better journalism.
That said, I think some folks on here are hypersensitive about team criticisms about the team from fans.

Objectively, the team is currently missing some key dynamics that you would like ideally: young talent, cap space, and a franchise to elite caliber QB.
That's not an exaggeration but also not something can't be fixed, particularly the overall talent and cap issue. A couple good drafts and a change from "we are close" to "we need to plan for future" can clean up the cap in a couple years.
The QB issue is the most difficult to address because the current top guys are all high draft picks( the odds say neither of our current backups is the future answer no mater how much we dream), and I don't see a Drew Brees scenario happening again.

The ownership dynamic is a double edge sword. On the one hand, we don't have meddling ownership (most franchises don't, but guys like Jerry and formerly Synder give the impression that that's the norm). Conversely, we have an elderly owner who at times seems at sleep at the wheel (I acknowledge she stepped in to can DA) and lets the GM make questionable decisions, and probably in next 10 years or so we will be looking for a new owner. We're not the worst but not in that Giants, Pitt, Chiefs, Rams ownership tier.

Most media highlights the sensational aspects of a story, which means highlighting the negative. You don't have to get offended when a writer or media person points out something factual. Multiple teams had a better situation than on paper this cycle. We have a lot of cleaning up to do, and it will take time. However, without an elite quarterback, we will not get far. So I guess it's time to see what our new coach will do.

Indeed.

Exactly. Just because this is the “proper” take to Covington, doesn’t make it the “proper” take to all. 😂

The issue is in the title of article.

Short term (2 years minimum) we will have zero cap space with most of our best players being aging veterans on a significant decline.

This means our next coach is basically guaranteed to start their coaching tenure with a god awful record giving them absolutely ZERO breathing room moving forward.

Poppycock. Loomis gets credit for doing a really good job of getting Payton the players he wanted. Loomis has done that with all the coaches. Loomis will do a good job of getting the players the new coach wants.

Kept telling yall that our team is not an “undesirable” HC opening. People are too quick to look at things surface level. You always have to look deeper.
A big part of it is that they are also looking at it from their shoes, because they've never been in the shoes of someone spending their whole career working towards getting a head coaching job.

If Payton picked the players that made the team great, then Payton picked the players, not Loomis. If Payton "hamstrung the team and bailed" then he did that, not Loomis. But I seem to be detecting a common theme amongst the front office defenders that the people that are still with the team did the good things and those that are not did the bad things. Is Loomis just a facilitator for the head coach or is he running the team?

My opinion is that Loomis' job is to facilitate but only to the extent that it doesn't hurt the team. In that way, Loomis has been a failure. He can change course and have the coach operate within some parameters, but his responsibility is to improving the team, not giving the coach everything that they want.

Same people, every thread.

“No, no, no…you and this article are wrong! We are terrible and you should be miserable and angry like I am about it! Get out of here with your positivity!”

Great article, thanks for posting. This organization is not as bad as it is being made out to be.
