Mike Garafolo: Saints are set to make a decision on Derek Carr within the next few weeks; likely to have multiple suitors if released (2 Viewers)

You said, "I like Rattler but he’s a fifth round pick..." For the life of me I still struggle with aligning a player's potential to where he was selected in the draft. There are countless examples of players that performed at a level far above where they were drafted, and countless example of players that performed at a level far below where they were drafted. My apologies for picking on just that piece of your statement, but the concept draws me in every time the 5th round pick comment comes up.
He says he;s a 5th rnd pick because there is a REASON he's a 5th rnd pick

It would have to make one wonder why it took 150 picks for him to be selected. I happen to think he’s much better than that and that we might’ve gotten our franchise QB. But, imo, he has not shown that he can develop over time, into a better QB than Carr. Do I want him to? Ofc. But I wouldn’t base the future on it happening by cutting Carr. Even though Carr represents the old regime. You go into the season with Carr and let Rattler develop as a number 2. Chances are, Rattler is playing by game 6 as Carr seems to have been getting injured these days.

If we made the playoffs would you have the same opinion?
It's not an opinion that a quarterback needs to be able to grip and hold the ball with both hands to play quarterback. That's a fact. The Saints being in the playoffs doesn't change that fact.

There’s no doubt that he plays if he made the playoffs.
That's an actual opinion and it's obviously your opinion.

He shoots that hand up.
It wasn't pain that kept him from being able to grip the ball with his left hand, it was an issue of strength. The damage in his hand weakened his grip. Shooting up wouldn't have made his grip better. Now, maybe rubbing some dirt on it would have helped.

If Kellen Moore decides he really doesn't want to move forward with Carr, they can certainly do that, but it would almost guarantee them no ability to sign any FA, including their own, Adebo, etc...

Its starting to feel like Carr is gone to me. New coach will want 'his' guy.

Kenny Pickett?

there is no proof. But there is common sense. Throughout his career hes played with injuries much worse that a non throwing hand injury.

There is certainly some legitimate criticisms that can be made re: Carr, but I don't question his toughness or willingness to play.....I have to say it astounded me that he was criticized on this board for getting injured on what clearly was an effort play I mean WTH?

It does not matter much what any of us think of Carr, it’s what Moore thinks of Carr that is important

Spot on, I'm going to trust KM's evaluation on how we move forward at QB....
He says he;s a 5th rnd pick because there is a REASON he's a 5th rnd pick

By that scenario was there a reason Tom Brady was a 6th round pick? The only thing that matters is what KM thinks of Rattler....TBH, I'm not sure it's easy to know based on the circumstances of last year.....TC is likely where things get a whole lot clearer re: our QB situation

He's going to run the same system he ran with Philly. Carr would actually be a great fit for that system.
Only thing he doesn't do well is the "Tush push" but that would be Taysom's gig if he returns.
They'll have to change the name though... maybe the "Saintly shove"....

He may not run that system. He's run like 4 different systems in his career. It's hard to know what scheme he will implement in New Orleans. The most telling quote from Moore during Super Bowl week was this:

“Obviously you want to be a team that is a physical football team, that plays with tempo, that pushes the tempo, that stresses the defense – whether it be shifts in motion or tempo, whatever it may be. But you really gotta get to know the people in the room and build a system based around who's in there.”

He's going to be scheme flexible based on the talent he has, but we don't know if he has a long term vision for how he wants to play or what QB he wants long term. It seems that he often works with mobile QBs but that could just be what he was given. What we know is that prior to Philly he had a reputation for wanting the throw the ball and to set up the run with the pass.

At this point we don't have the line for any pushing. We couldn't even do a tush fart with how the line looked. Maybe it's coaching, scheme, players, I don't know. I am sure that will be a priority of KM, fixing the line.

Hard to imagine they would part with a solid good talent like Adebo, just so they move away from an average QB with no clear player to take over either position. It seems Carr under center is practically guaranteed for the 2025 season baring some small chance a team like the Giants want him and are willing to take his current contract, and Carr is willing to waive his no trade clause to allow it to happen.

The RPO that Hurts does is a great fit for Carr? Hurts ran 11 times for 72 yards in the Super Bowl. Carr didn't have that many rushing yard in 10 games this year and got hurt on one of the runs he did do. I don't think they are even remotely alike.
