I picked up Minecraft recently and joined a server with 3 friends. Anyone else play? Any tips for a beginner?

I've read terraria is a rip off. But an improvement.

This is one game I have put in my cart to purchase from Notch's website and never hit that last "purchase" key. I have never been so torn on a game. I have watched YouTube videos and the very concept is amazingly intriging to me. It would take me away from my responsibilities worse than Rift already does. I.....want....this.....game.

It's a pretty simple sandbox game. The world randomly generates and has endless opportunities to be creative. The game doesn't guide you and what you make of the world is ultimately up to you. My friend created a server so it's just us 4 in the whole place, but we've started building a town and train tracks. For all those complaining how games only focus on graphics these days might appreciate this one.

I bought this game and played it a while back.

It's interesting but I just couldn't get into it.

I became so bored...but I could understand why someone would enjoy this open world sandbox game where you just build everything with pixels. I found it boring and very hard to look at after a while.

This is a niche game all the way....buyer beware

the dude is now officially obsessed with this game...like Lego Star Wars level obsessed

is there anything i can pass on to him other than what the youtubes have to offer??

he is trying to find diamonds right now and having a bit of trouble

Two of my nephews are crashing my house tonight... They are minecraft geeks. They are 7 & 8, but they've got two older siblings @ 11 & 13 that have taught them the basics.

Supposedly, one of the things planned for this evening involves showing the boy everything they know about the game so they can MP via Live.

If I happen to pick up any details, I'll let you know... Additionally... If The Dude would like to add someone to his friends list, call me and I'll give you the boy's tag.

Lately he's been on a Dungeon Defenders MP kick with his cousins. Also big into MLB/Nicktoons baseball among others.

He's been using the stock headset, but he may get my X31 as a hand-me-down if I can bring myself to spring for a new one.

My 11 year old boy is hooked. His mind is very creative so he enjoys it.

Both of my boys are hooked heavily on this. They're 14 & 10. They've purchased both the Xbox & PC versions.

Every time I walk by and see them playing this I get all nostalgic inside remembering growing up on games that looked exactly like that. I feel good for them discovering that a game doesn't have to look as graphically beautiful as most do to be so awesome.

Ever got down on the ground and played Legos with your kid? Yeah... Like that, but so much more involved. Mining, hunting, building, etc... You take raw materials and combine/cook them into something else. You can then take those new materials/ingredients, and make more intricate machines/objects.

My son is the brains behind the operation, and I'm the brawn... Basically, he comes up with the crazy ideas, and leaves me to do heavy lifting while he runs around collecting materials.

We've got a two-story house complete with bedrooms, crafting table, furnace (cook/change materials), & torches for lighting the interior.
On the roof of the house are trees & a garden which the boy planted, and then the perimeter of the roof is ringed with Jack-O-Lanterns that give off light to help us find our way back to the house @ night. There are also pathways leading out from the house and those are lit by torches.
The Light house & torch pathways were necessary in his mind because his character got turned around, and was caught off-guard when the sun went down... @ night, zombies, creepers, skeletons, & spiders come out and will attack you, so we found a quick way to locate our place & then run back should it start getting dark.

We've made tools, fishing poles, a fishing pier jutting out into the water, a boat, gardens, and a large storage chest just to name a few items.

He's loving the game, and I'm having fun watching him come up with ideas, and then getting excited when he sees them actually shape up.
