Myanmar Earthquake (MBS reporting from Bangkok)

I’ve spent a lot of time in a lot of places but the people of Myanmar are by far the nicest people as a group that I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with.

And now they have to suffer through this with about the sheettiest government on the planet. God help them all.

i woulda been like a lizard crossing a puddle.

Fear not, my SR brethren.. i am ok.. and no, ‘Bangkok Earthquake’ is not a metaphor for somehting else.. actually it occurred in neighboring Burma/Myanmar, but was crazy here in Bkk with buildings collapsing and total chaos.. i was chilling on my couch at 1:30pm today, Friday when my new condo building starting shaking and swaying .. i had not been drinking so, being an American, i thought terrorism.. in any case, as soon as my wall clock fell to the floor and busted into a million pieces, i grabbed my passport and phone and i hightailed it down the stairs and outside .. did not even have time to put on shoes, my feet have been burning all afternoon on the sidewalk outside .. until the building manager kindly brought me a pair of boots.. they were 3 or 4 sizes too small for my feet , but at least they weren’t burning anymore.. after a few hours they let us back upstairs to grab some belongings, so now im back down hanging in the lobby.. some pics from just after it happened .

Glad you're okay!!

We have a new doctor here at work who is from Rangoon, Burma. She used the old terms "Rangoon" and "Burma" as opposed to Yangon and Myanmar. I was going to ask her about her choice of words but I was...distracted. She's very attractive, and gave me her number to discuss one of our patients. Maybe this ends up in the dating thread... :hihi:

At any rate, not to threadjack but I wondered if you had some insight as to why she would use the older verbiage? I'd also welcome any cultural insights you may have.

She also mentioned that a major bridge was destroyed, and she feared it would take decades to rebuild due to the ongoing civil war. She has no desire to return until the war is over.

Nah buddy, unfortunately i dont have any intel or real knowledge of why the name change occurred .. all i really know is that it’s a war torn nation that ive been instructed not to visit .. also, the woman who cuts my hair is from Myanmar.. she doesn’t like it there and has no desire to go back or even visit .. she is also drop dead gorgeous and, if not for the fact that she does an awesome job with my thinning lettuce- i would seriously consider asking her out.. but if I did and things didnt work out, i would hate to lose her great (120 baht -about $4 usd- plus whatever i tip her) haircuts and have to find somebody new .. The only other thing is that i have a cousin named Mark, and in the course of furiously texting relatives yesterday to let them know i was ok, ‘Myanmar’ got autocorrected to ‘Me and Mark’- so now heretofore in my family that country shall remain known as ‘Me and Mark .’ :hihi:

She was actually talking about relocating to Vietnam or Cambodia at some point. She said the best part about Rangoon was up in the hills above the city where it's cooler, but also ridiculously expensive.

I'll ask her about her use of the older terms, good conversation starter

I’ve got a Vietnamese hairdresser here and she does an amazing job took me forever to find her. She’s on the older side but she’s one heck of a flirt, And she’s not bad looking. She’s one heck of a flirt too but I think she does that to get better tips.
