There is no such thing as a can't miss NFL prospect when it comes to QB's. For everyone that translates from the collegiate game there are two that do not.
While I think it would be insane for Carolina to forego the opportunity to get a potential franchise QB even with less than 50% odds, it would be even more insane than to dismiss signing Orton who has proven he can be a VERY GOOD NFL QB in the right system. Like 500 yards single game passing and leading the lead in efficiency for almost half the season good.
One is a proven- albeit older- commodity. The other is nothing more than Joey Harrington, Todd Marinavich, Jeff George, Alex Smith, JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, etc (could list a hundred, really) at this point...
Depends on whether you want to go for the homerun or not. Orton is what he is - an average to slightly above average QB. It does not appear that he will ever be a superstar. A rookie could be a complete bust. I do not see Carolina trading for him as it would be tough to justify trading a #3 and another pick (they do not have a #2) for that type of QB and then spending top $ at #1 for anything other than a QB in this draft. Now if they can trade down from #1, that may change. Orton is OK, but he is not the most accurate passer. He needs to get his completion % up to be considered a good QB IMO.There is no such thing as a can't miss NFL prospect when it comes to QB's. Arizona, SF, Minnesota could all improve dramatically if they simply had a steady QB. Orton is that.
From your lips to God's ears.....
Carolina needs a lot more than a quarterback. Just sayin'.
