I remember a lot of SR members were high on this guy in 2016 (me included). But we were wrong, apparently.

Report: 49ers may cut 2016 first-round draft pick Joshua Garnett

"The 49ers liked guard Joshua Garnett so much in the 2016 NFL draft that they traded up to get a second first-round pick and acquire him. They don’t like him so much anymore.... "
"Garnett is in danger of getting cut, according to the Sacramento Bee. .... "
"Garnett missed the entire 2017 season with a knee injury, there’s a real chance that the 49ers will eat the costs and cut bait on a draft bust. "

Why do I feel like Reuben Foster will soon be joining this list of recent high draft pick busts within the 1-2 years. It's scary and mind-boggling how close this idiot came to being our #1 draft pick last year and that our FO, the genius Sean Payton wouldve been stupid enough to pick this walking trouble-maker. I realize some of you guys might criticize me for bashing Payton and Loomis for something THEY didnt do, but why in God's name would they have ever showed any interest in Foster in the first place? Hindsight's 20/20 I get that, but there were rumors of him failing multiple drug tests before the 2017 Combine, being told to leave the NFL Combine in Indy because he reportedly failed a drug test or his sorry, impatient arse couldnt wait his turn in line so he started misbehaving. There were allegations of Foster having disciplinary problems at Alabama and you cant tell me Loomis and Payton werent privy to some of that information. It they didnt, they lying or their full of sheete, because both of there track records and history here with Saints indicates their neither stupid nor ignorant. And its not like there werent some big red flags about Fosters character and off-the-field issues in months leading up to the 2017 Draft.

Niners GM John Lynch did us an enormous favor by being a bit more riskier and stupider drafting a talented but emotional basketcase LB.

I don't see how this fits here. Seems you've an axe to grind.

Last I heard Foster's gf was exposed as being vengeful and her injuries were the result of a fight she'd gotten into earlier which had nothing to do with him. The weapon charge isn't as big a deal to me as he didn't have a stockpile and wasn't selling arms to gangs. He's pleaded no contest and it's a misdemeanor. He'll be suspended most likely, but he's still a young guy who has a lot to learn. Hopefully this gets him on the right path.

I feel like it’s wayyyyy premature to call him a bust. He had 1 year in the league then got injured. That doesn’t = bust to me. If they’re just looking to get rid of him I’d happily give him a shot

Should fit well for a team looking to run power/gap/counter/etc. Titans, and from what I hear probably the Raiders, are running those systems. Just two off the top of my head. Wouldn't be shocked to see him picked up for someone's training camp.

Funny part if he does get cut is that the 49ers jumped Seattle for him to be petty, that forced Seattle's hand to draft Ifedi and they both look like sheet.

If they cut him, that means paying this year's as well as next year's salaries, eating the cap hits. One would think they'd try to get -something- for him. A trade comes to mind. But they're talking about cutting him outright. That's a powerful statement.

Yeah, if he's cut, he'll be in someone's camp in no time. But again, I'm shocked they're even considering a cut. A trade (even for nothing, where another team eats the cap hit) would make a lot more sense. So I'm kinda shocked. They must be really down on him.

I’d give up a conditional 7th

There's more than meets the eye to this. Locker room, work ethic, personality conflict, depression... something.

He'll get a change of scenery and either become an All-Pro or fall off the planet.

i don’t think the 49ers have cared about those traits in any player that has ever been on a roster.

I do like Joe Montana though. Love the time he hung the coaches bicycles up in the trees.

Or the commercials Steve Young and Jerry Rice used to make.

If I’d have to guess, there’s more to the story. Maybe he’s lazy or has s bad attitude on top of having a bad knee and underachieving.

I don't think there's more to the story because I don't think this is actually a story at all. If you read and click the provided links, it is shown to be just baseless speculation based on a quick quote from a Q and A article written by a journalist with no cited sources. The guy was asked who he thought could be the biggest surprise cut, and this was the best he could come up with, simply based on two free agency acquisitions (one of which is Jonathan Cooper, who's been terrible) and Garnett coming back from injury (nothing in there about character issues, etc). The writer swung and missed, but even unwarranted swings are beneficial for his job.

It's not happening though. Aside from Garnett's spotless character record, teams aren't going to throw away a very young, talented offensive lineman who's only accrued seasons so far have been a rookie season followed by a 2nd year cut short early by a knee injury, especially when he's still got 2 years left on a guaranteed contract. They have way too much invested and nothing to lose by simply letting him develop for another 2 seasons. Cutting him now would be akin to had the Saints cut Peat (his former teammate) after his disappointing rookie season - and it's a darn good thing we weren't short sighted enough to do that. High profile rookies get injured or have disappointing starts to their careers all the time, and go on to become elite caliber players shortly after. Heck, even Cooper, another former 1st round OG, got 2 additional seasons of awful play after his rookie season was cut short by injury before he was finally packaged with a 2nd rounder to snag an elite defender in Jamie Collins from the Pats.

Maybe. But they just extended Laken Tomlinson another 3 years at a cool 18 million. That paired with Jonathan Cooper signed to nearly 5 million for this year alone puts a lot of doubt on Garnett. The Niners run an outside zone, but Garnett comes from a power system.

Check out a write-up that hit the news a few hours ago. They invested a lot of money into other guards (much more than Garnett's contract). That, paired with his dead last rating of all guards in 2016, paired with missing 2017 with that knee... doesn't look good for him, IMO.

San Francisco's intentions were made a bit clearer last Friday, as the team inked Tomlinson to a three-year extension worth up to $18 million. And with Cooper poised to earn up to $4.86 million this season, Garnett could easily be the odd man out for the starting lineup.

During Garnett's rookie year, the Niners ran an inside-zone blocking scheme under then-head coach Chip Kelly. Head coach Kyle Shanahan operates an outside zone. Zone-style blocking schemes require excellent mobility and the ability to hold down blocks in space. This is one of the reasons why Shanahan and Co. asked Garnett to slim down his body after missing all of last year with a knee injury. Garnett did accomplish this, but Tomlinson's extension creates more doubt.

Back in 2016, Garnett's Pro Football Focus pass-blocking efficiency stood at 93.2 -- 61st and dead last out of all qualifying guards that year.
