GavUK, you missed some of the best years to be a Saints fan. Over the last 15+ years the Saints held some of the most prestigious records in the entire NFL. What made that time even more special was that for the first 40 years of this club’s existence we were the ‘lovable losers’ that everyone made fun of. At times even our own fans had to ‘embrace the suck’ of a mostly bad football team each year.

But those horrible lows of the early years made our recent winning ways even sweeter, especially for us older ones who have been around to experience all those early struggles. Our Superbowl victory in the 2009 season only left success-hungry Saints fans wanting more.

Sadly we were never able to reach our full potential since that momentous victory and stumbled on our way to the big game several times. But we remained one of the top draws for viewers for many years.

However since the ‘retirement’ of our former head coach Sean Payton last year, we’ve been in a death spiral trying to find anything close to a successful team. But the organization appears to be strong & resilient and none of our diehard fans are ready to throw in the towel anytime soon.

Welcome aboard the Saints train, and hopefully we will all be enjoying some glorious seasons together real soon!

1. The Falcons have been our rivals since the beginning in 1967. We hate them. We hate everything about them. I don't even wear the color red because I hate them. They are best known for blowing a 25 point lead in Super Bowl LI. Any time you see anything referencing 3-28, it's to troll them. They are to be hated at all times. No exceptions.

2. The golden age of Saints football was 2006 to 2020. We won the Super Bowl on Feb 7, 2010. It was one of the best days of most of our lives. We waited a long time and went through plenty of heartache over the years. We deserved that Super Bowl. The Drew Brees and Sean Payton era was the best in franchise history.

3. Being a Saints fan these days isn't for the faint of heart. We are currently in a downward phase. The younger generation is learning what it's like without a hall of fame QB and coach. For example, Sean and Drew came to the Saints when my daughter was 3. She is 19 now. She grew up only knowing the Saints as a winning organization. The last two seasons have been hard for her to grasp. Most of us who were fans prior to 2006 expected this.

4. The name Bill Vinovich makes our blood boil. He is the worst ref in the entire NFL. Most hate him. I, personally, will hate him for the rest of my existence. For more info, Google "Saints NFC Championship no-call".

5. I knew maybe 5 Bucs fans prior to Brady going there. Now there are a ton. They'll be back down to 5 fans soon enough as Brady won't be returning.

6. The Panthers have been irrelevant in recent years, but they have a ton of draft picks now due to trading players. They are currently in full rebuild mode. If they draft well, they will be scarier than people expect. This is just my opinion though.

7. As far as expectations for next season, I am still unsure. If the same coaching staff remains, I don't expect much. We are in desperate need of an offensive coordinator. I would also like a new head coach, but the organization will likely give him another year. So to answer this part of your question, I'll say "To be determined". The next couple of weeks should be interesting.

8. The dome gets really loud for home games. If you ever come to New Orleans, try to make it to a game. It is an incredible experience.

This truly is one of the best fanbases in the league. Welcome aboard!

Ive decided to start getting into the NFL now its more widely available here in the UK, Ive picked the saints because I like the colours and the logo and I know you dislike the buccanners (but dislike the falcons more) and i support Manchester United and absolutely despise the glazers.

What information should I know to become a good fan of the saints? Why do we hate the falcons so much? What are your expectations for next season?

Welcome ! Becoming a Saints fan in 2023 is what we here in America call a “ground floor opportunity”.. the team hasn’t been this mediocre is many, many years so (hopefully) you can enjoy our eventual ascension back up the NFL rankings.. just probably wont start happening for another 3 or 4 seasons til we truly bottom out .

One thing im a little confused about- you support Man U but despise the Glazers (?) I thought they were the current owners.. what’s up with that ? I just think it’d be incredibly hard to support the Saints, for instance, if i despised Ms Gayle (as we affectionately call Tom Benson’s widow, and current Saints owner.)


One other question- i have been thinking about throwing my support behind a futbol (soccer) team, since i have several American friends who are massively into the sport.. one of my good friends is a major Leeds supporter, another is Arsenal.. i am leaning towards Liverpool, simply becuase ive been a big Beatles fan since the age of 7 yrs old.. that’s really my only rationale.. Any advice ?

First and foremost, you were there to see this. You couldn't get tickets so you and your pals climbed a tree to look into the stadium to see as much as you could. You caught the call on a handheld radio. It doesn't matter that you weren't born yet or live on the other side of the ocean. Every Saints fan swears they were there.

1. Pre Sean Payton/Brees/Reggie Bush era to the present - (goes back decades, tons of historical information and game experiences to share, "O.G die hards", lost a few years of ours lives through the struggles/battles with this team..etc)

2. Sean Payton/Brees/Reggie Bush era to the present - (they are ok )

As for picking the Saints, it may not always be fun but at least you will never be bored, always something going on ( not always good)

One more thing GavUK, please don’t let the ugly uniform combination that we wore this pass Sunday turn you off to being a Saints fan. This new losing regime was just trying something new to try and spark the team for a victory rather than do what really works best… that is, develop a good game plan.

In reality we really do have some of the best uniform combinations in the league. Wait until you see us in our Color Rush scheme!
