New Orleans set to finish 2019 with lowest murder rate since 1986 (1 Viewer)

How is it ‘right down the street’?
Pretty sure the major areas are still the East, 8th Ward, Hollygrove and Algiers
None of which are close to the medical corridor at all
UMC is not all that far away from old Charity or University Hospital, which stood in for Charity as Level 1 Trauma post-Katrina. So I'm not quite sure how "right down the street" has even changed.

As for "major areas," that would be the East, Central City, and 7th ward over toward maybe the Florida-Desire areas. Homicides in Hollygrove and Algiers these days are probably the exception rather than the norm (I don't know where the 8th ward is).

Yall, hate to tell you, but it's because of University Medical Center being open. Massive and modern facility for treating shootings immediately next to most of the high-crime areas.

It's the same as it ever was, just less bleeding out because the best hospital is now down the street.

Do I have data for this? No, not at all. But it seems pretty obvious.

Edit: Should add, "hate to tell you" is in regards to the effect on the crime rate. I don't hate to tell you all that it's saving lives-that's obviously really good.

I wonder if you can see a direct jump following Charity being closed. That’s a very good point.

While this is fantastic news... Does it take away from the fact that Louisiana has three cities in the top ten for Murder?

Shouldn't this be on the political sight anyway?

Title should have read "New Orleans set to finish 2019 with lowest reported murder rate since 1986".

If murders aren't being classified properly it will most definitely skew the numbers to make them look better. We need to see the data if there has been an increase in other crimes.

Lakeview feels like it’s under siege. The car thefts and break-ins are in broad daylight now. The police can’t pursue (unless it is levee board cops or state troopers) due the consent decree.
The bigger problem is the revolving door on juveniles when they are arrested. There has been a big push to keep them out of jail with judges setting low bonds and organizations paying the bonds. A member of the mayor’s inner circle has bailed many of these teens out, not just for car break-ins but for rape and assault. Lakeview is pissed. A meeting is set in a couple of weeks that will have a massive turnout. The juvenile judges are being targeted through email and phone calls to protest this policy. Election dates on these judges is being circulated as well. The police presence in Lakeview on Tuesday resulting in some arrests after having three schools on lockdown twice during the day is because of pressure being brought on the police department. It isn’t just cars either. Couple that with police response taking hours and many people are arming themselves.

As for statistics, many crimes are not part of the statistics because the cops show up too late. My neighbor had both cars hit by a drunk driver. Cops showed seven hours later and told him she probably wouldn’t test positive now. Result was report on car wreck but no crime. This is happening often in many situations. Someone on here disparaged Nextdoor.com but I trust the neighbor I know over a politician's reporting of stats. Crime is up even in what used to be safe areas.
