New Orleans set to finish 2019 with lowest murder rate since 1986 (2 Viewers)

It would be interesting to see the breakdown of victims known to the perpetrator, although I am not certain that information is necessarily available.

This data is somewhat dated now, but the breakdown here is interesting:

Only 10% of victims were strangers to the perpetrator and only 13% of the overall number of homicides occurred by gunshot wound. I imagine the numbers might be slightly different in NOLA/the US.

The vast majority of murders in New Orleans are by gunshot and involve young male African Americans - most commonly arising from drug trade and retaliation. So the killer and victim have a relationship of some sort.

wait...then that would mean Nextdoor tends to the hyperbolic and hysterical *shocked face*

but seriously, i assume this is part of a national trend like a similar change in crime in the mid 90s - or is NO asymptomatic?
People just don’t shoot as well anymore

FWIW, the number of non-lethal shootings is flat to up, which suggests the lower murder rate might be more a matter of luck than anything else.

There are other reasons to take the drop in murders with a grain of salt. Perhaps the biggest: The number of non-lethal shootings was on pace to jump up by about 3% in 2019 as of mid-December, when a cyber attack on the city’s computer systems complicated access to reliable crime numbers.

Why there were substantially more killings in 2018 than in 2019 — despite a similar level of gun violence — is something experts can’t readily explain. Historically, Asher has argued that the number of shooting incidents may be a better barometer of violence than murders — in part because there are more of them, and whether a shooting becomes a homicide can depend on medical care, luck and other variables.

Yall, hate to tell you, but it's because of University Medical Center being open. Massive and modern facility for treating shootings immediately next to most of the high-crime areas.

It's the same as it ever was, just less bleeding out because the best hospital is now down the street.

Do I have data for this? No, not at all. But it seems pretty obvious.

Edit: Should add, "hate to tell you" is in regards to the effect on the crime rate. I don't hate to tell you all that it's saving lives-that's obviously really good.

Good point, I was wondering about that exact question.

Goes to Mr. Sparkle’s point too.

How is it ‘right down the street’?
Pretty sure the major areas are still the East, 8th Ward, Hollygrove and Algiers
None of which are close to the medical corridor at all

Proximate to Central City, Broadmoor, and fairly close to the 9 yeah?

Because it is lol?

See how it’s right inbetween the two biggest groups of dots?
i see a cluster of shootings around MLK and claiborne that might have been the Daiquiri shop shooting from months ago and then the clump in Treme/8th Ward like i said
i guess it's semantics whether the 8th is 'down the road' or not

but like you admit, you're not offering data just a reasonable speculation
i guess you would want to show that shootings have remained consistent, the caliber of weapon is same/similar and a corresponding uptick in ER visits

if i'm going to speculate, i would say the post-PJ turf wars have stabilized as has the drug trade

What are you talking about? This is data from 2014-2016, the daquiri shop has nothing to do with it. The map looks like this every year. If you get google map directions from Kermit’s TREME Mother-In-Law Lounge to UMC it’s a 7 minute drive RIGHT NOW in NYE traffic.

also shootings HAVE remained consistent with an uptick actually, someone already posted that. There’s just lower lethality.

Drug trade hasn’t stablized, heroin is everywhere. US is still in a drug epidemic and SE LA is the biggest port in the world

I will once again make an inference : You are at least four drinks in :p

the thread is about a decrease in murders for the last 2 years

And this map shows you are off base about the historical hotspot neighborhoods and also shows that the various neighborhood’s murders don’t change that much over time. A map of 2016 is obviously still useful to us, the crime areas don’t rotate from neighborhood to neighborhood like the college football national championship used to.

UMC is pretty much right in the middle of where most of the murders happen. Period.
