Incompetent refs, corrupt league, or maybe just the league giving the refs orders to keep the game close or maybe just to "stay out of it" and the refs trying to do what they were told to do, but going too far.

I sorta feel like it was the later, but the worst happened. They couldnt have known that the game would come down to TWO absolutely blatant penalties. So by staying out of it, they basically decided the game anyway.

This explains it best to me. It even explains why the league has been mum on the subject. They dont have an answer, because there isnt one. To continue watching this sport, I almost have to believe this is the case.

Yep.
However it went down, and rest assured something did as you allude to.

This lifelong fan ain’t buying it. I don’t blindly (figuratively as I am quite literally blind lol) follow what’s force fed to me as the undisputed truth.

I have a brain, and I question all. One way or another they lost my trust, and my wallet. And I don’t care if it doesn’t have any impact on the league. It will have a positive impact on my life and I’ll know I’m doing the right thing. For me.
I also took about 50 fans with me, and did not ask them to follow me. They agree and chose what I’ve chosen of their on volition.

As all fans will do such for themeselves, and I respect that.

F the shield. Today, tomorrow, and into eternity. I will never forgive, nor will I forget. And that is not typed in anger. Just resolute finality.
Josh, I know that you ain't the only one who has forever labeled the league as not worthy of giving any of their time, money, or emotional output.

The NFL still has some very important decisions to make if they are not going to lose the remainder of their fan base. They first will have to flush their pride of having all football fans by the short hairs. If some decisive changes aren't made in officiating, every single questionable call will send people's minds back to Robey-Coleman's hit on Lewis and the issue will come right back to the minds of the fans who feel they are on the wrong end of the call.

Pandora's Box is now open. If they can't find a way to put her back in the box, the league is going the way of the dodo, and the AAF will have the green light to set up shop as the new top dog of American professional football.

And for me to not be a hypocrite, I have to add that for years, I have wanted the league to do just that. Tell the refs to stay out of every game. Only throwing flags on blatant and agreggeous fouls.

I can see those orders being given to the refs, and I can see that causing them some trouble implementing those orders. Danged if you do, danged if you dont. Sucks that it turned out the way it did.

I'm not defending the league nor the refs here, just stating the easiest explanation and the only one that checks all the boxes in my tick'd off brain. The league tried to tell the refs to call a game as it should be called, but with no experience doing that, the refs blew it.

ABSOLUTELY! They blew it by trying to change the way the game is played during one of the most important games of the year... and got burned badly. You can't 'stay out of' officiating a game properly when the rules REQUIRE that all games must be officiated properly to be legitimate.

They pooped their pants by trying to hold it in. :hihi:

Well said Bill, as always.
And I have not written off my lifelong team make no mistake. I’m still battling internally. ?
Who Dat friend and have a great day.

The game is literally controlled by a few billionaires. Take that for what it is.

I think a lot of the game influence really came into play noticeably in 2001. We had the 9-11 events happen and who won the Super Bowl that year? The “PATRIOTS” of course. It was a team name everyone could get behind and bring us together, United in a cause. Even when Drew Bledsoe went down with an injury, in steps this scrawny little guy, a 7th round pick from the University of Michigan named Tom Brady who miraculously brings the Pats to the Super Bowl and defeats the GSoT! ?

IMO this is when the league became much bolder with their influencing of games. If they could take a certain team to the SB and get them the win, what all else could they do?
We played the jets that year. It was just like the rams game with the officials.

Perhaps. I won't argue against something I can't prove.
However, I still want to believe that the games are going to be decided by the teams on the field... if not before now, then hopefully in the future.

If I'm not convinced that they are going to be legitimate in future games, then as I said several times before... I'm showing myself to the door. If you don't believe the NFL won't be under a fan & media microscope from this point on, you're fooling yourself.

The owners are smart enough to know that they have a lot more to lose that just those rating points for this past SuperBowl. And they need to get it right going forward if they are going to survive the scrutiny that's coming.

Something we haven’t taken into account yet is how will officiating effect the players?

Yes they make Millions playing a game, they put their bodies and brains at risk every time they step on the field. If the NFL and the Refs are blatantly effecting games like they do, will the players play differently or even not at all? Is it worth them losing millions to keep their health and sanity when all their efforts really don’t mean anything if the “League” is dictating the outcomes?

Don't forget about the first NFL week after 9/11 we played the Giants at the Meadowlands. I remember the BS offensive pass interference that occurred in the end zone and took away a TD to win the game. It just seemed "right" that the NY fans had something to cheer about after all the tragedy that recently took place.

I remember that game clearly. They called a penalty on the Saints for so many plays in the first half that the NFL front office had to call the referees at half time to tell the refs to knock it off. It was clear that there was no way the Saints (or any team) was going to beat the Giants that week.

Oh hell it was the Giants...I swore it was the jets. But anyway it was still the worst officiated game ever.

Please refrain from thinking the refs to be incompetent. That’s what the league wants you to think. They are organized and manipulated by the league office, Vegas (read: mobster crooks and murderers), or (most likely) both, in order to manipulate in turn the outcome of games with the utmost competence. Whether it’s the spread, the over/under, or the outright winner. That’s what they are paid to do.

There is a reason Ed Hochuli was one of the longest tenured officials in the league’s history. He worked as an attorney with bad faith law being one of his specialties. I’m sure he revolutionized and elevated corrupt officiating to never-before-seen heights during his tenure. The officials, such as the ones you all witnessed in the playoffs, learned from the master of duping the public.

I don’t really know much about grifting, but I’m sure there are plenty of scams where the con pretends to be a total idiot.
