NFL Scouting Combine: Feb 27–Mar 2 (32 Viewers)

I want the no shows at the combine to run before I decide who I would like the Saints to draft.

I'm sure Fannin is going to run again at his Pro Day to get his 40 time down into the 4.6 range.

Agreed. Had he run even a 4.69, I feel like there wouldn’t have been nearly the same negative reaction to him running a 4.71, which obviously in the grand scheme of things is incredibly minimal and likely won’t make a difference in his ability to be a good pro player. Just seeing that 7 instead of a 6 isn’t aesthetically pleasing for some. For me it really changes nothing. The film was very good for Fannin.

Rich Eisen & his combine "talking head" buddy had a video of 2 players running side by side with only minimal difference is 40 times & it resulted in about 3 feet of separation.

Yep. This is what many people don’t get. Those tenths and hundredths matter, big time. It looks minuscule, but side by side, it could make or break a play.

That said, I do also believe that there is game speed some of these guys possess…quickness, in and out of breaks and turns quicker, fast decision making, guys that run better with full gear on than others, etc., so that all has to be assessed also.

Here’s an example of what the difference of 4.47 (James Pearce) to 4.49 (AJ Brown) looks like (2 hundredths of a second).

Technically a 4.71 to 4.69 would be even closer than this example as the slower the time the less ground is covered each hundredth of a second making the gap even smaller.

Really puts in perspective how meaningless that little difference is. Especially at TE. How often are we sending a TE on a deep 40 yard route downfield. Fannin ran a 1.56 10 yard split which is very good for a TE. Happens to be the same 10 yard split that James Pearce ran.

For a TE that 10 yard time is way more important. He clearly had a good initial burst of speed. He also was good in his 3 cone drill which highlights his ability to change direction and quickly accelerate. These things are far more important for a TE than being able to run fast 40 yards down the field given the type of routes they generally would run in the NFL.

Here’s some examples of Fannin’s quick change of direction and acceleration to create separation during Senior Bowl reps:

I went back and watched some of Fannin's highlights through the 4.7 lens. That's probably fairly accurate, but he can do a lot of things which makes him intriguing.

He reminds me a lot of Jordan Reed (really good Commanders TE from about 10 years ago). They are almost identical from a size and testing perspective. They both have no issue “getting open” and make things happen once the ball is in their hands.

Nice comp.

I agree whole heartily!
Not everyone can handle the 10-15 lbs of equipment that football players wear the same.

This is where I think strength matters.

Hopkins on NFL network was talking about his 40 time at the combine, he ran a 5.18 and something like 18 on the bench. He said he got stronger in the NFL and ran a 4.8 after a couple years of getting stronger and faster.

What these guys run now won't be what they run in the NFL, they could improve or regress.

Pro day numbers are hand timed and thus never as accurate.
