Nick Wright On The Saints Salary Cap (5 Viewers)

I really don’t understand the cap nerds. There is no special prize for being under the cap. There is no surplus that rolls over to next year. The resources are for spending. The only requirement is to be compliant. The Saints are the only team that handles the cap properly and everyone else is just mad because they suck at math.

What people don't understand is that the Saints do the contracts to give them the most flexibility. There was a report about Carolina's cap and the Saints cap when it comes to signing Carr, and even though the Panthers were better off cap-wise, they had little wiggle room compared to the Saints. And, the Saints had the ability to free up more space if they needed to.

Loomis isn't just a bean counter, he's an exceptional bean counter. I wish I could get him to do my taxes. :D

Since the 2011 CBA teams can roll over unused cap space to the next year.

Wait, when did Tom Green change his name and become a sportscaster? I thought his whole shtick was personal humiliation for laughs and relevance. Good to know he's sticking to the same routine.

Oh, that really isn't Tom Green you say? Man, the lengths some comedians will take to steal another's bit.

I think that language was taken out and it became automatic in this last CBA since every team request it every year.
It’s still in the most recent CBA. Several teams have declined to carry over space (including the Saints) since the rule change in 2011.

A large percentage of our cap does goes toward players no longer on the roster. But we also have a lot of guys underpriced because they have backloaded contracts. The Saints are essentially paying with a credit card with 0% interest. A fool wouldn’t do it

This is actually one of my favorite parts of the offseason. Everyone thinking the Saints are toast because of the salary cap and then their heads exploding when the Saints still make a splash in FA and going, "they cheated...". Love it.

Surprisingly, everyone includes some Saints fans as well who have deluded themselves into thinking that the cap prevents the Saints from doing what they want. If the Saints want someone bad enough, they can make it work.

Cap space does roll over to the next year.

Yep...I have said this before, but the salary cap is nothing more than a pesky accounting task, one in which you're literally allowed to use cap dollars from future seasons years down the road, perpetually.
