I never learned this kind of stuff in school. Apparently, they filled a pool with a mix of cornstarch and water made on a concrete mixer truck. It becomes a non-newtonian fluid. When stress is applied to the liquid it exhibits properties of a solid.

I've made that before with my preschool class- in a much smaller batch of course. It is fun to play with.

I used to work with a professor at the University of Houston that had a bunch of "fun with physics" experiments that he would take around to the various schools.

One of them was with a mixture of corn starch and water on a paper plate. You put you hand in it, and pull it up, it looks like a liquid. Then you slap it with your hand, and nothing splashes.

Good fun!

Oh man, my mom used to always make that stuff for me when I was a kid. We would add green food coloring of course to give it that "slime" look. It's really bizarre to handle since it gets so hard when you squeeze it (boy that could be bad if taken out of context).
