So back in May my daughters 2018 Tuscon had engine fail (rod bearing failure) which was covered by Hyundai. It took 30 days but they covered a new engine.

When we got the car back we noticed a bit of paint coming off the hood. Within 2 months half the hood and the entire roof had peeled off. Called the dealer who said there is a recall on "white paint" issues HOWEVER, UNFORTUNATELY 2018 is NOT on the recall list.

So friend owns body shop. He has done 100s of these cars for them and said he will call his guy. Denied.

So I called Hyundai NA and opened a case. Case manager called and told me the warranty on paint is 3 yrs. I'm like for paint to fail in first 3 years, it had to be worst paint job ever.

So we paid to get hood and roof painted. I get call yesterday...when they were pulling the tape off, they removed even MORE paint on a totally different area. So now gotta get that painted.

Just frustrating that Hyundai is really not stepping up here especially after having had a pretty good experience with engine. Now they are 180 degrees from that process on this paint issue. Which is a massive issue according to many reports I've found.

Meh. Venting.

I’m curious, what will happen if they go ahead and issue a recall for the year and model that your daughter has? Will they reimburse your costs?

I have to assume so but as of now, they will not answer that question. The case manager has my paid invoice for the work (plus I have in file ) so they cannot say I didn't pay/have work done etc.

And per my conversation with him yesterday, it certainly didn't sound like they were going to do anything. He was adamant that 3 years (or 36k miles ) was their red line and wasn't going to change.

I'm still holding out hope that they will agree to even 50% cost because I had no idea how much it cost to get hood and roof painted.

Shoot I was looking around for a Fact O Bake lol. But none near me. ( I think one in Baton Rouge but that's too far/inconvenient)

My biggest gripe is it is widely known (and Hyundai accepted) they had a white paint issue for years. And selectively applied extended warranties to many yr/models yet left off 2018 as if they had it all sorted out. But they didn't.

I was a Hyundai fan since the early 2000s up thru when I had a Genesis G80 but I am hearing a lot bad about them in the past few years

I love my Genesis G70 but the stories are true about the dealerships being poop...

The only reason your failed engine went so smoothly is because they had to...there was a class action lawsuit against them. We got a new engine for my wife's old sonata. Google about the theta 2.

It isn't just the "white paint," despite their BS. I recently saw a news report (wishing I remember what video it was) where a producer of the local news network had a blue Hyundai (it might have been prior to 2018) and they literally peeled a large patch of blue paint right off; they also sprayed the car with a regular garden hose and the peeling continued. Hyundai will eventually lose a massive lawsuit or fold and fix the problem (when sales decrease like they should) like Microsoft did with the Xbox 360 and the RRoD.

Thats how we lost the roof paint- 3 weeks ago, i was washing her car with garden hose!!! ( didnt want to take to car wash to expose to high pressure )

My driveway was a mess - because it didnt come off in sheets, it came off in pieces.

Thats when i finally said we have to get it painted.

Sorry I wasn't referring to the G80 I had...loved it and never had an issue until I had a hit and run with an 18 wheeler.

I was talking about hyundai in general and the service. All Star Hyundai in Baton Rouge sucks

My wife loves her sonata limited. We hated getting rid of it but it already had one new engine and started throwing a knock code again after 50k on the new motor. That's most likely a software issue and a flash would've fixed it but we weren't chancing it. Just too many problems with that engine.
