5th year option deadline for Olave/Penning is May 1st

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.
Sometimes it does.

But I'm not suggesting he give us a hometown discount just to pay back goodwill. I'm suggesting he be smart and not chase every last cent because it's a huge risk for him to go to another team and flame out. He's not the kind of player who can just go anywhere and succeed.

It's page 4, can we talk about the money?

You look at the 2026 cap and to extend these guys is going to likely cause more restructures, and Loomis is running out of players to extend.

If he extends them, then he'll pay a small cap charge in 2026 on them, and start the ballooning of dead caps into 2027-2029. That's a big concern with Olave.

Cut or moreso trade either of these guys this summer forward after June 1 brings a $6M dead cap for Olave and $4M for Penning. If that's their thinking, then again, Loomis stockpiling some cap money may account for that.

We don't know what Loomis will do on May 1, we do not have the spreadsheet at our disposal, but I assure you these decisions are already made. Mickey often does things we do not expect.

While you may say accurately that a trade would likely not yield much if anything, certainly in Olave's case, the true plum of a trade is getting them off the 2026 books forward. That's the prize here of not extending them now, and buying time to decide, even at the risk of losing them.

You would like to see these guys have an offseason and season with the new coaching staff. If the team is a middling or worse team, but Olave is healthy, then he could be a November trade candidate.

Penning I'm not so ready to give up on. His play improved last year. We thought he was going to be an exploding dumpster fire but he settled in. Give him a new staff that coaches offense and develops players, and maybe he sticks. I would not be surprised to see them extend Penning but not Olave.

Something to consider. I don't know what family would go on social media blaming the QB if the brother who's a WR talked positive of that QB. For his family to do that, Olave himself is likely negative on Carr in hushed circles. Then add to the fact that Carr has thrown only 1 ball to him that led to a concussion (or was it two?) out of how many? 5 or 6? 3 or 4 of his concussions came from college. Throw in Mike Thomas openly declaring his thoughts on Carr, and we suddenly begin to see a trend. Then there's the fight with McCoy that occurred and now we're seeing a very concerning, consistent trend.

I was really high on Carr coming here. Not because I thought he was world class or anything. But I believed he could've been a good leader with above average skills. It seems (at least to me) that its obvious he's not a leader, possibly even a bit toxic. Certainly, unwilling to be the face of this franchise. And still to this day, I can't think of him without remember that play he threw to Olave on the sidelines that went over Olave's head, while Taysom Hill was open and the play was for him to be read #1. After the pass went over Olave's head and was uncatchable, Carr went off openly on the field on Olave.

I'm just seeing a massive lack of leadership from Carr, and the Mike Thomas social media comments, Olave's family social media comments and the massive fight with his center mid field, then massive fight with Olave mid field...... just thinking on it and listing it all out really makes me want to move on from Carr. Let him follow Dennis Allen around or something.
Well Olave stopped and shrugged his arms. Carr was relying on Olave as his go-to. This wasn't the old Saints offense. Carr likes his targets no matter how covered. And that is the kind of offense we need, because it shows Carr is not afraid to find his guy in a tough matchup where the lesser receivers can't get open.

And your team don’t get better with exercising team options on players who haven’t lived up to the billing or who has a good bit of injury concerns.
I was referring to the thought of letting them leave in free agency, not the 5th year option. There's a middle ground between those two options.

The biggest issue with the 5th yr options on both players is timing. They both have a wait and see yr and the decision has to be made on 5/1. Olave to see if he can minimize his concussion issues, and Penning to see if his trajectory is on the way up

This is huge right here, two 1st rd picks and seeing alot of speculation of Olave being traded. Would absolutely love to keep both and hoping and praying both can have an incredible healthy season.

Seen this yesterday, and mentioned what would be a trade, during the draft that would absolutely shock you and believe it or not these 2, plus Hill would be a dagger to the chest if traded.

One has to wonder, could this play factor in the upcoming draft? Gonna be a really interesting draft and super excited for it!

What yall thinking about this one?
.
No on Both, We would be overpaying. Penning is barely serviceable. Olave missed a lot of the season from concussions. He is one hit away from retirement.

I look at Devonta Smith in Philly the early knock on him was he was too slight and injury prone. But the talent is undeniable so Philly did a deal.
Same with Tua, Dolphins did the deal.
Saints will do a deal with Olave he is a proven talent.
And Penning won't command top of the market money so there's that...

Dont wait another year the price will be doubled in 2026, do the deals now.
